* In 2007-2008 Washington used the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) to test students in reading and math in grades 3 through 8 and 10, in writing in grades 4, 7 and 10, and in science in grades 5, 8 and 10. The WASL is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Washington. The grade 10 WASL is a high school graduation requirement. The goal is for all students to score at or above the state standard.
