Read what parents are saying about George Washington Middle SchoolFrom firsthand knowledge, it is regrettable to report that George Washington Middle School is grappling with significant challenges. The school's environment, instead of fostering learning and development, is often dominated by unruly and occasionally violent behavior. The administration, tasked with managing these issues, appears to provide insufficient support to teachers to address these challenges effectively. Their unresponsiveness not only intensifies the burden on those dealing with these behavioral problems daily but also significantly hinders the overall learning process. Moreover, the school faces additional systemic issues. The misuse of electronic devices, insufficient interdisciplinary collaboration among teachers, and a flawed approach to student recognition all contribute to a disheartening environment that calls for decisive intervention and transformation. One issue that merits particular attention is the handling of the honors program. What should be an emblem of academic achievement has become disappointingly disconnected from genuine merit. The school's (and ACPS's) focus on critical race theory seems to have driven this shift, leading to a disturbing trend of recognizing underachievement and distorting the true purpose of the honors program. Instead of distinguishing high-achieving students, it appears that virtually anyone can be designated an honors student, thus undermining the program's credibility and devaluing the accomplishments of truly deserving students. In light of the existing challenges, George Washington Middle School may benefit from an external intervention by the state. A comprehensive transformation focusing on reestablishing discipline, educational excellence, and genuine merit-based recognition is urgently needed.Put plainly, the situation at George Washington Middle School is a cause for concern. As someone intimately familiar with the school's inner workings, it is my hope that bringing these issues to light will help trigger the necessary reforms. This is a critical step in ensuring that the school can fulfill its central role in educating and preparing our future generations.
Posted by a community member on 7/13/2023This school is horrible the amount of kids who vape drugs ete is horrible also fights I know fights happen a lot of middle schools but if you want 4-5 fights a day don’t come here I was an Spanish class when I fight broke out between 2 people when they were fighting I almost got hurt because the desk got slammed in my way aiming towards my stomach it is not safe. Also the amount of bullying at this school is also insane you can never focus in class even if it’s honors if you’re going here good luck. Also most 6th graders this year left because of how bad it is.
Posted by a community member on 6/19/2023This is probably the worst school I've ever had the displeasure of being at. Gas leaks all the time, ceiling tiles falling, bomb threats/shooter threats on the regular. Some of the teachers were nice/accommodating- but that's all up to chance. Others were pretty awful!
Posted by a community member on 4/19/2022The resources at GWMS are amazing and the educators are focused and at the top of their field. Our children have had great experiences at the school. They and their peers have also scored very high on standardized national tests which I think is a testament to the school’s quality of education.
Posted by a parent on 5/27/2021Our son, and our whole family, have had a terrific experience at GW Middle School. Strong academics. Talented and caring faculty who really get to know the kids. Top-notch activities, fairs, language programs, Academic clubs, (and sports beginning in 8th grade). The college-track students do exceptionally well on national tests, too.

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is focused on the lowest performing students. If your child is average or above average then you can expect that their day will be filled with worksheets. The staff also don't work together well. Students aren't grouped for instruction at their. The classroom instruction is what the lowest students are able to do.Parent Review2y ago - George Mason Elementary School

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe moved from Orange County in California and we are overwhelmingly pleased with Jefferson Houston. We see our children thriving. The principal knows and greets all students by their first name! The classes are small allowing teachers to give attentive care. The electives are once a week! In California we were lucky if they had P-E or art twice in a month. And the middle school art program is phenomenal. We highly recommend Jefferson Houston.Parent Review6mo ago - Lyles-Crouch Elementary

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI was happy with the school in 2020 during the pandemic, a weird time for all of course but the kindergarten teacher did an inedible job with the circumstances. My only reservation before was the principal but now with the new principal and new AP the environment feels refreshed and the enthusiasm is palpable.Parent Review7mo ago - Mount Vernon Community School

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur daughter is in 2nd grade and has attended MVCS since Kindergarten. All her teachers have been wonderful -- attentive to her and responsive to any concerns we have. The dual language program was difficult in virtual school but she is accelerating again now that they have been back in person full time this year. We speak English at home, but multiple native Spanish speakers have commented to me that her accent is incredible. The early grades so far have not focused on homework, which we love -- kids receive books to read and are encouraged to do math activities, but no formal homework is assigned. Our daughter tests well, reflecting the great teachers at this school. MVCS has particularly focused on Social Emotional learning since the pandemic started, and the kids have a lot of tools for recognizing and regulation emotions, particularly stress. We hope this focus remains in place for the long run, as we really like it.Parent Review2y ago - Potomac Crescent Waldorf School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI highly recommend the grades program at PCWS. Our child started at the school three years ago and, at the time, we didn't know much about Waldorf pedagogy. As a parent, what I've seen is that the teachers at PCWS have an extraordinary understanding of physical, academic, and emotional needs of the students and integrate that into all aspects of learning. Things like multiplication are taught while jumping rope and building manipulatives, so that math facts aren't just memorized, they are wholly understood. I can see that my child is learning perseverance, how to think creatively, make observations, ask questions, and solve problems - skills that aren't widely developed elsewhere. Even though we only have one child at the school, our whole family has enjoyed being part of the community.Parent Review4mo ago - Immanuel Lutheran School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe teachers and admin are very good at their jobs. Our child engages with the lessons and activities, has become an independent little person who listens to instructions and can think for himself at a young age. The school enables students to learn about friendship, compassion, and how to be an interactive social being.Parent Review4y ago
