We think SHMS is one of the best kept secrets in Northern Virginia. We did not know about the Montessori curriculum beforehand, but have been thrilled with our daughter's academic progress and growth reflected in the promising scores she received on the WISC-IV test. The expanded facility is an absolutely wonderful environment in which to learn and grow. I am extremely impressed by Sunset Hills Montessori School. The owner of the school is very involved and truly cares about the well-being and development of the children. There are probably a couple hundred kids in the school, but she remembers each of their names and greets them every day at school.
... Read more The teachers are well trained in the Montessori teaching methods and they are very caring, yet strict about following the rules. My son really enjoys going to school. We previously took him to Chesterbrook Academy, but it was terrible, and comparing the two is like night and day. The thing I like the most about Montessori is that the kids are taught individual responsibility, independence, and respect for others. I highly recommend this great school. It is a more expensive than some other schools, but it is very much worth the extra cost. Read less

Read more teachers, the obvious love the teachers and administrators have for the kids -- but more than anything else, whenever I asked my daughter 'did you learn that from your teachers?' her answer was always 'no, I taught myself!' The school underwent a recent addition and other improvements to school grounds to create a lovely setting for children to learn and play. My pre-school son enjoys his regular classwork, plus the special instruction in Spanish and music. The teachers are wonderful and we have a good rapport, we function as a team often alerting one another to problems or progress we observe on 'our watch' so we can seamless address them throughout the day/week. Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course. Adult Education Classes
Programs offering GED or equivalent courses for adults within regular schools, whether classes are held during evening or daytime schedules.
English as Second Language
English language classes for students whose first language is not English.
