Immanuel is a wonderful small school right off of Russell Road in the City of Alexandria. It is a classical education school, and as parents with a child who has attend Immanuel for the past several years, we have been very pleased. Academic expectations are high, as well as behavoral expectations.

ILS is a wonderful school - truly a little known 'gem' in Alexandria. My child has been at ILS for 3 years and we have had a terrific experience with the school. ... Read more is very impressive. Latin begins in 3rd grade and the teaching of classical literature and composers, and the history of western civilization begins in Kindergarten! I would not suggest that you bring your child/ren to this school & Church. It is a very closed, old school of thought environment. The children are rarely praised rather constantly criticised. There is no leadership and the school survives on church funds and a few people that call themselves teachers.

My twins have really enjoyed this school and have had the joy of sharing a classroom for their 4th year. My son and daughter have made such great progress over their years with Immanuel. I was told that in public school they would have to be separated at kindergarten. I couldn't bring myself to separate
... Read more them and then put them into a new environment. They have had all the individual attention necessary. They have continued their close friendship while making new friends in school. They have excelled at learning and have have acquired skills that have taught them to work in a challenging program with confidence and poise. They have done a lot of improvement in the school library this year and it is beautiful. The students participated in reading incentive programs and it was so hard to get my kids to put down their books. They read non-stop. Read less

Being a military family stationed in the DC/VA/MD metro area can be very overwhelming- Housing - commuting - and schools just to list a few. My knew ILS small class sizes would be better from my son than being invisible and overlooked at public school. It is completely the individualized at ILS. He is now in 3rd grade. He feels completely comfortable speaking in front of his class, participating in musicals and talent shows, or asking
... Read more questions. I attribute this to the love and support he has received from every teacher at Immanuel. The teachers really know their students because of the small class size and combined class rooms. My son has had the same teacher for 2nd and 3rd grade and they start the year knowing their students and how to reach them, their abilities, how to challenge them, and what they are capable of. The teachers start the school year making progress instead of relearning forgotten information and getting to know their new students. Read less

... Read more wait to go back the next day. Over the winter and spring breaks all they talked about was returning to school. They have learned so much and I feel they have advanced my children well above those children in Public School. If your looking for a small school where the teachers are dedicated to the children and to the school this is the place. Strong parent involvement is evident. Excellant Christian teachings. Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course.
