Posted by a parent on 8/28/2023Disappointing experience with middle school. We were told the school works with learning differences other than language-based issues and that our child would settle in within weeks, relax, become engaged and we'd seem improvement in ability and confidence. After two years, we have not. Many teachers do not return emails, communication is lacking. Curriculum is outdated. Although webpage states they work on Executive Functioning for kids with ADHD they do not. Supposedly there is someone on staff in the lower school who has done executive functioning tutoring and would be working with middle schoolers, but have never heard from that person. When asked if they'll be overtly addressing Executive Functioning in high school, was told they are "piloting a program." Our child is still struggling in spite of the existence of evidence based interventions, of which the school does not use. Teachers do not seem to have specific training in learning differences. Some require students to write note cards even though they have dysgraphia... one teacher was not aware of talk to type feature in Google suite. That seems like something basic they should be aware of and offer as an accommodation. Many classes seem too elementary. There's a difference between dumbing down content vs creating rich learning experiences for those who learn differently. Discipline in the middle school is lacking. Not sure if admin doesn't have a discipline plan or they're afraid of disciplining kids of some families ($$), but for two years our child has struggled with kids bullying. There should be intervention/conflict resolution skills taught to all students, as a part of community building, who because of their learning differences tend to be less mature than their chronological age. Our child has not felt safe or supported. Overall, not sure the school knows their identity. They began as a school for language based disorders, but have taken on kids with other learning profiles and are failing at serving them. I personally know other middle school families who feel the same way and who are not returning for high school. Two years spent here and we are no further along.
Posted by a parent on 3/15/2023My granddaughter was/ is dyslexic. Her parents had frustrating and disappointing experiences with trying to get any help for her. To be discouraged and unhappy in 1st grade because you can’t keep up or read is no way to start an academic career! Her parents enrolled her in Briarwood where she thrived and learned. She is now in her HS years at St Francis where she made a seamless transition. Her PSAT in reading is in the top 1%. And other scores not far behind. So thankful for the part Briarwood played
Posted by a parent on 12/6/2022My child has been at Briarwood since 6th grade, and they have flourished every year. The teachers and counselors have such a love for the students, and they are truly invested in making sure our kids succeed. My child's confidence in his academic ability is iight years past where it once was. New leadership is working really hard on a refresh for school policy and curriculum, and the kids have access to tech that they didn't have a few years ago. I've seen a lot of positive change over the last couple of years, in spite of the hardships with COVID. Most importantly, character is just as important as the academics.

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageComing froma magnet school to ashford was a drastic change for my kids. The teachers were kind and loved my kids but there's no challenge for my kids at this school. I never saw homework. It wasn't given. 1 or 2 projects and 1 field trip for only my eldest kids (she told me 2 were canceled because the students were disrespectful to the teachers and the good had to suffer for the bad very often). I as a parent had to deal with my youngest being bullied and also witnessed bullying walking from the school to my home. I've also witnessed on many occasions children almost getting hit by a car on kirkwood going home. For the kids in this school zone, there need to be a cross guard on kirkwood, the parents need to control and walk with there kids and the school need to challenge the students and inforce a strict bullying policy so the kids can be safe at the school and walking home.Parent Review11mo ago - Askew Elementary School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy daughter is in the GT program and loves her teachers. I’m a volunteer and have seen many staff go above and beyond with helping students and parents. From giving supplies, uniforms, bags of food, and just some of their time. Askew is home.Parent Review8mo ago - Shadowbriar Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy son has been enrolled at Ray K Daily for the last three years. He is thriving. The teachers and staff truly care about the well rounded learning experience. Principal Khaliq makes sure that parents are informed and works to build a school community. I am an active member of the PTO which shows how much the Principal supports parent involvement. The teachers care and communicate often. Ms. Pena is incredibly supportive with wraparound services for students, parents, and teachers.Parent Review5mo ago - Nottingham Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have never had a bad experience with NHE. I was shocked at the reviews I read. I may need to move soon and it is so hard to find a rental zoned to this school. People are trying their best to be in this zone. All of the teachers, parents and children I have met have been awesome and my son loves it and I am very sad to be possibly leaving.Parent Review5mo ago - Memorial Christian Academy

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy girls love going to school! We are greeted by the wonderful staff at carpool with smiling faces both at drop off and pick up. They also share antidotes or interactions they have with our little ones each day. From my first tour five years ago to present day, I knew my granddaughters were in “good hands”. Yorkshire Academy is a place of learning that embraces students as well as their families. Staff members provide a warm, nurturing environment that allows its students to learn, explore, and grow. Students are taught rigorous academic content, as well as a variety of enrichment courses that stretch their minds by exposure. On campus you don’t turn a corner without seeing smiling students that develop a love for learning. I cannot imagine a better place for my granddaughters to prosper!Other Review9mo ago
