We joined this school in 2006. In the two years that we have been there I can honestly say it has changed our lives for the better. With the help from counselors, our school teachers, and especially the principal, Ms. Kinkade, my son is now excelling. On a scale of 1-10, this school is a 10!

Mathews Elementary is a diverse school community with a close knit family feel. There are less than 500 students and an excellent student/teacher ratio. Highly recommend this special neighborhood school.

The most diverse school in the city - International Day is a special event with food, song, dress of different countries represented by students in the school. A small school population with parental involvement.

Two of my children enjoyed four of their most enriching school years at Mathews. Mathews, its teachers, and its students gave both of them the opportunity to learn in a multicultural educational environment.They participated in different activities that introduced them to the world of music and art (science
... Read more fairs, writing contests, recitals). When my son entered Middle School, he joined the Jazz Band and the Orquestra, given his exposure to music at when he attended Mathews. Its library is one of the best features!It was a joy seeing the children expending their time borrowing books, reading, or listening to a story teller guest. Even I enjoyed it,when volunteered to help in there. Most of all, my family found a place where we were known by our first name, and where we found a warm and friendly place for our kids to grow. This is one of the best elementary schools in Austin. Economically and ethnically diverse, all of the students here are treated with respect--and treat each other with respect. There is a true love for learning and reading at this school that makes it stand out from all the rest,as well as a 'free' atmosphere

Mathews is a jewel of a school. It's not in our neighborhood, but it's on the way to work. I've enjoyed 'car pooling' with my kids. It's located near enough to central Austin (where I work) that it's easy to drop by during lunch or for special school activities. We searched all over town for the 'right'
... Read more school for our multi-cultural children. This is it. Mathews draws students from the naturally integrated neighborhood of Clarksville, and the U.T. married student housing. They nurture and respect diversity while giving academically gifted kids the challenges they need to succeed in middle school. Another plus is that the sixth graders get a year of leadership experience, instead of being on the bottom rung in an unfamiliar school. Mathews is a very unique school in terms of cultural diversity. Students are from over 40 different contries in the world. The school tries to understand all the differences, incorporating them into teaching. I love Mathews.

Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course.
