... Read more beneficiaries, there are drawbacks that can have a very negative affect on a DF student even after graduation. Because of DF's 'standards of excellence,' the competitve nature of the school is extremley intense and at times can result in a student's poor self- image. Furthermore and an even bigger issue stems from the socio- economic status of the students that attend DFHS. As the school serves a very affluent area of Columbia, diversity (racially and economically) is very minimal. This being said, graduates have such a 'skewed view on reality.' Dutch Fork is one of the best schools in the state hands down. Offering a faculty that cares about the student and plenty of challenging courses, Dutch Fork does an excellent job preparing the motivated student for college. The majority of teachers are concerned about each individual student and will do their best to help prepare them for the AP exam or a test, be it staying late after school or scheduling a study group session at B&N. In addition to academics, Dutch Fork has extracurricular activities that everyone can get involved in. As a former student, I cannot be happier with Dutch Fork and the opportunities the school offered for me to get a head start with college. Read less

The parental involvement is adequate, the music and sports are more involved. Academic programs are adequate preparation for college level courses.

This is a response to the previous review. As a senior in 2004, I took both Spanish IV and Honors Physics. The students in my physics class were given the opportunity to take the AP Physics exam at the end of the year, and several jumped at the opportunity. The only reason some AP classes are not
... Read more offered certain years is because there is not enough student interest: the smallest class size allowable by the state is somewhere around 8 students. If the minimum number of students do not register for a course, it will not be offered. As in the situation I described with my physics class, administration will work with students individually to meet goals and actuate plans. I deeply enjoyed my Spanish IV class and my AP English teacher was better than any I've had so far at Furman University! Read less

Opportunities for study are limited at DFHS, due to its emphasis on test scores. Teachers teach to the test. Be aware that many courses listed in the catalog (among them AP Physics and Spanish IV) have never been and will not be offered. Dual enrollment is also near impossible, as the school prefers

Dutch Fork excels in every aspect of education. The support staff is always helping parents and students attend to their needs. The principal and all the administrators truly care about the students and making sure every student receives special attention while in high school. There are many opportunities
... Read more for students to get involved in extracurricular activities and sports. The clubs at Dutch Fork provide outstanding contributions to both the school and the community. Although at times, like many other schools, Dutch Fork may get caught in the race for the highest test scores, it seems to overcome that glitch because of the hlep of wonderful, caring, and hardworking terachers. * In 2007-2008 South Carolina used the High School Assessment Program (HSAP) to test grade 10 students in English/language arts and math. The HSAP is a high school graduation requirement. The HSAP is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of South Carolina. Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course. AP classes are specific and not to be confused with other higher-level classes such as honors classes.
Before/After School

Adult Education Classes
Programs offering GED or equivalent courses for adults within regular schools, whether classes are held during evening or daytime schedules.
English as Second Language
English language classes for students whose first language is not English.
