Read what parents are saying about The Family SchoolOur son went here for two years, and I wish I had brought him there a year earlier. He learned and developed so much in this very engaging program. The teacher to student ratio was outstanding, and their method really delivered results. I was continuously amazed at what my 3, then 4, then 5 year old son was demonstrating, both in terms of skills in writing/reading/math but in broad general knowledge such as geography and biology. The creative activities and library resources, in addition to the extra programs such as the small animals guy and the incredible stage programs the kids put on are rely impressive, far beyond what might be expected from a small school such as this. The scale of the school means that everyone gets a lot of attention and all the staff are very committed and pleasant to interact with. The summer program is amazing, with lots of external activities and trips.
Posted by a parent on 11/24/2014I went to this school for 8 years and had some of the best times of my life. The staff is so great and friendly, Ms.Haberman is one if the nicest people I know. The montesorri style of learning helped me learn so much. The way of learning is so much diffrent and so much more benifical that it doesn't compare to any other school. When I aged out and went to a public middle school I quickly got bored and quickly got to the top of my class because I had already learned most of the material from the family school. I couldn't see why you wouldn't want your child to go there.
Posted by a community member on 8/2/2014I had to give this one star because there is no way to give "no" stars. This was a terrible experience for our child. It took several years for him to get over the trauma of attending this nightmare. The only thing the Family School has in abundance is arrogance. Over priced. Pretentious and devoid of compassion. They left our child sobbing on the floor, without so much as hand on his back for comfort. Just awful. Spare your child the abusive experience of this place. It should be shut down.
Posted by a parent on 7/24/2014Our daughter was at the Family school from 18 months until Kindergarden. It was the absolute best experience on a whole academically as well as emotionally for her. The teachers are beyond nurturing and intelligent. The head mistress is amazing and caring and always available for any thoughts or concerns. In taking our daughter out in K and having her start a new school, it in no way compared to the level of education that she received while at the Family school. In our opinion, nothing can compare to it, so we brought her back and I cannot even express how happy we are with our decision. Not only is our daughter happier but she is getting so much more academically and emotionally than most schools provide. We love The Family School, and the teachers and administrators are always so polite and helpful. My husband, daughter and I feel as if we have truly come home by bringing our daughter back.
Posted by a parent on 10/10/2013This is our second year at the school at The Family School West, and we have been nothing but pleased with our experience. On our first parent/teacher visit (and they have several throughout the year) we knew we'd made the right choice. The teachers clearly knew our child, specifically. His strengths and his weaknesses. The teachers are knowledgable, and they maintain the ability to control the classroom while being sensitive to each child's needs. You will need to ask and engage the staff if you are unsure what is going on, but you will be amazed at the level of attention that is paid to both your questions. It is difficult to find out information on the school as they do not choose to maintain a heavy online presence, but call or send an email and you will receive all the information you need. We have been nothing short of amazed at the amount of knowledge our son has acquired, all while being happy, and having fun! We have been very pleased during our time at The Family School West.

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy child has attended PS59 the last few years. This school is zoned by The United Nations, so it is one of the most diverse schools in the city. It is a school where children learn to be world citizens and all cultures, values and contributions are celebrated. This is a wealthy area and the PTA raises significant money to pay for extra teachers in classes PK, K and 1st grade. Enrichments such as Arch for Kids, Central Park Zoo Partnership, City Centre Dance Programs, African Dance, NY Philharmonic Field Trips, A full STEM program which includes Robotics, Coding, 3-D Printing, Littlebits and a full Art Studio. The School has Reading and Math Specialists, a beautiful library filled with current books, A full size Gym, Theatre and Rooftop Playground. A greenhouse is being added this year. Test Prep for the ELA grades 3-5 is paid for by the PTA and free for 3rd-5th graders. The parent body is extremely active in the school. The students attend International Day, where parents set up booths for each country and kids learn about each country and get "stamps" in their passports, The Fall Festival, Winterfest, A Film Festival where the students create their own films and they are screened, Bingo Nights, Monster Mash for Halloween, Math Curriculum Night and many more events to engage the families. There are also “Family Fridays” where parents can visit the classrooms and see their children in action. The academic bar is set high, and many students who attend are students who will attend private or parochial school for the upper grades as well as the Specialized Public High Schools. Chess is big in the school. The students score high on the ELA tests. Class size is not large. If a student is falling behind there are specialists to work with the student one on one. A robust afterschool program offers Sports, Art, Dance etc. at a relatively low cost. It is very popular. The Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers and Staff work extraordinarily hard to create a school where everyone is welcome to succeed, learn and grow. I was on the fence whether to send my child to private school and am so happy I chose PS59 instead. My child has all the bells and whistles private school provides with the additional bonus of a broader, richer world education and peer group. You can see how happy these kids are. Mine wants to be first at the school every morning.Parent Review1mo ago - Ps 116 Mary Lindley Murray

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageAs a concerned parent, I feel compelled to share my deep disappointment with Lyceum Kennedy School. From the moment we enrolled our child, it became abundantly clear that the school's claims of providing an enriching educational experience were nothing more than empty promises.Parent Review11mo ago - Saint Albans

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageNIGHTMARE and BEWARE of law suit. We had the worst experience sending out kid at St.Albans. We decide to pull our child out of this school after one month and they hit us with full one year tuition. We found out they also did the same thing to 5 other families like us. We received a court papers and we had to get a lawyer as well. We end up settling outside of the court but it was a nightmare. The principle and senior preacher are horrible people. Do not send join kids to this horrible school.Parent Review2y ago - The Montessori School of New York - Manhattan

10/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe new school building is a pleasant departure from the typically older school buildings in NYC. A standout feature of the school is its early "robotics" club, hosting a club for FRC entry (First Robotics Competition). This program exposes children to STEM fields from an early age, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. The school's approach to homework, starting from 1st grade, promotes accountability and develops good study habits. The teachers are young, passionate, and patient, fostering a positive learning environment. Their active engagement with parents via the ParentSquare web portal is commendable, keeping parents informed and involved in their children's education. The PTA is very active, consistently providing enriching programs for kids of all grades, including organizing engaging field trips. The quality of the After School program is good overall, with a wide spectrum offering and certain activities standing out as exceptional (Chess, FRC club, a few others)The school boasts a well-organized Chess program, which shows promise of becoming a strong contender in future NYC competitions. The principal's involvement and dedication are impressive - she appears industrious and driven. The school's focus on academic achievements without an overtly political agenda (DEI etc) is refreshing and stands in contrast with Schools like PS111, or even private schools like Grace School. The teachers at all levels are EXCELLENT - they are dedicated, supportive, and skillful at fostering a positive learning environment.Cons:Firstly, the after-school vendor's logistics staff appears to have a high turnover rate, which can cause inconsistency in the quality of services provided. However, it is noteworthy that this issue seems to be somewhat mitigated as of Spring 2023.Secondly, the school's elections and input to integrating the recent (non-English speaking) immigrant students could use a more strategic plan. I understand this was shoved on (all ??) NYC schools, and that it is good to provide opportunities to all children, yet the school needs to take steps to ensure this does not disrupt the learning pace for existing students. It would be beneficial to implement specialized programs or resources (Special needs ?) for these new students to help them catch up and integrate better. I predict all PS NYC schools that took in immigrant arrivals will have a huge drop in scores and quality in the next 2 years. Its a tough situationOther Review10mo ago - Montessori School of Ny
