Being a Montessori, the guiding principle at the school is that discovery is at the heart of learning, and Homestead offers the kids there so many incredible opportunities to do this on their own, in nature, with their friends. The teachers know every child's strengths and needs very individually, and help the kids learn to manage their own learning. My daughter is currently finishing first grade and her reading progress this year has been incredible. She is a passionate researcher and loves the natural environment, so Homestead is really the perfect place for her. There is no question that the homestead was a blessing for our family. We sent both out children there, from pre-k through sixth grade, and in so much as a school can help shape a child, we have to give the Homestead credit for the people our children are today. They both transitioned to Sullivan county

But more important, both our children are self-confident (but not arrogant), have a strong moral compass, are sympathetic to others and are socially adept in any situation, due on large part to the foundation given them at homestead. A great deal of the credit goes to the Montessori method, with blended age classes. That is a huge deal. Because it means that there were times when my children would turn to an older child for help, and times when they would be the one assisting a younger student. It allowed them to build confidence, empathy and a sense of community --what more could you want for your children. The Homestead School not only taught and challenged my children academically, but it helped to build their character, and for that we are eternally grateful. Read less

Don't let the "materials and work" fool you they are about as disorganized and chaotic as I've ever seen. Last year I was dropping my daughters lunch at school and there was a child sitting at a desk in the hallway...apparently he requested a "quiet" place to work so he could think.
