The school for the most part is a great school but I have to agree with the parent who posted May 14,2009. There is a lack of communication and a lack of organization. And now with all the sickness going around they are not notifying parents as to how many children are out sick or being sent home.

My daughter attended this school last year for Pre-k and now this year she is in Kindergarten. At first i thought pre-k was nice and once we got into kindergarten it was totally different. The classes are over crowded to begin with and the teacher can not attend to each child's need. Another problem
... Read more is the P.A - there is barely any direct communication with them except for the endless letters we get with requesting for donations. The lack of communication with the principals lacks as well. In the end this school is overcrowded and they have a non-stop request for financial donations. Read less

It has a wonderful teacher base and I think the education here is very good. However, since NCLB and the City rating system, our school has become very high pressure and unreasonable. It is losing it's ability to balance the desire to achieve high marks with the fact that these are young children.
... Read more An average of 2 1/2 hours of homework a night for an 8 year old is draining, especially when the school dishes out extra projects and overload of work for weekends and vacations. Also, the city of NY doesn't allow collecting statistical data for multi-cultural children. If it did, our school would have a very high % of multi-cultural children. It's one of the most wonderful things about the school. The school is also overcrowded and gone are the days of 25 children per class. From 1st grade up, it's more like 28-35 per class. Read less

PS 101 offers a rigorous program along with special events and parent involvement if you are able to take advantage. The PA runs a great afterschool program along with a lovely mother/son and father/daughter dance. Unfortunately, these parents also have their own agenda and other parents who would like

The administration holds evening workshops as well as the workshops held in the morning. There is also an enjoyable Parent Book Club that is run by Ms. Gold, social worker. This school has dedicated teachers who work hard to educate our children. I find that the principal is approachable and tries hard to make this school a warm and nuturing environment. Nothing is perfect, but I am glad that my child attends this school and so is she. At first sight the school seemed nice and the staff seemed to be sincere and on top of things. This is not my experience now. I find the head staff to be unreliable and not knowledgable in communicating with children and parents. I am trying to transfer my son midyear (thats how unhappy with this

Also there is a high rate of bullying and the staff seems unable to determine the source of the real bullying. I found my son was safer in Morningside heights school than out here in nice Forest Hills. I truely regret ever enrolling him here and feel he has lost out on this years education. Read less

PS101 was a great school for my kids, both have moved on to middle schools. It gave them a solid base and the skills to test into 'select' schools.

We have had a mixed experience at PS 101...class sizes are large and there are no aides in the lower grades; some teachers are fabulous and others clearly 'coast' (as was the case with our child's K teacher); administration seems to be trying to improve communication with parent community but there is

I very much agree with the parent who described the PA as an intense and small group of parents with their own agenda. It seems that many parents hesitate to get involved because of the cliquish vibe the PA gives off and the constant harassment for more and more monetary donations. Read less
