A fine school, but maybe not the best in the area. Students are certainly bright and creative, but are often smug and self-congratulatory. They seem to nurture know-it-alls who don't in fact know it all. Drug use is a problem, as it is in many high schools. if the 'fit' is right socially, then your

child will find friends. However, the students are all loud and charasmatic, and if your child isn't the right fit, they may struggle there, socially and academically. In hindsight, I wish I had sent my child elsewhere. Read less

My daughter is in 8th grade at St. Ann. I believe she is a bit lost. Adequate preparation for the now expected was never provided in earlier grades. Problems should have spotted and addressed when they were happening. My daughter if highly intelligent, but St. Ann's did not provide a solid foundation.

Yes, they nurture difference and creativity, but do not seem to provide consistently the basic tools for full expression of those differences and creativity. If you are not a natural 'winner' (and I mean that in the less discussed PC sense), forget it! I don't think St. Ann's knows what to do with the 'quiet ones,' the uncertain children that are not fully confident, who might have some apprehension about school, success, learning, etc. This is a wonderful school, perhaps the best in New York city, if the fit is correct. It is definitely not for everyone, however. Read less

My son and daughter attended Saint Ann's School through middle school. One child's strength was in mathematics; the other's lay in writing and music. I was impressed with St. Ann's ability to meet the needs of both children equally, counter to what I had heard was a math weakness at this 'arts-intensive'

school. Academically, I have only praise for St. Ann's. The teachers, many of whom are working artists, historians or mathematicians, convey extraordinary passion for the subject matter, and this transfers to the students. However, the social scene strikes me as as exclusive and intimidating as at any other New York private school. As the average income of St. Ann's families has increased, the school itself has become more rigid and businesslike--no longer feeling an obligation to help families through rough patches, etc. So: An excellent school, but less of a community.
