ArtSpace provides a project-based education, using the arts (visual, drama, dance, music) as a conduit to allow the students to gain a greater depth of knowledge of the NC Standard Course of Study. Since the end of 2007, there has been a tremendous amount of change. The new Executive Director (June

A business director was hired (Feb 07) who has 20 years of experience in business management, personnel, marketing and development. More formal math programs were identified and brought into use. Teacher certification is above the state average. The building was expanded to 35K sq ft. with a theater. As with any non-profit venture, it is filled with people of passion - doing it for less than in the traditional public school system. This school has advanced considerably in all areas as a direct result of her leadership. Statements made about 'emphasis only on visual art' and 'falling test scores' are completely erroneous. My son gets drama, music, dance and visual art every day, in equal proportions. And as for test scores....they keep climbing ...Recently an Artspace teacher recieved the North Carolina Teacher of the Year award for Charter Schools. I am proud to be an Artspace parent! Read less

I placed my child at ArtSpace because I valued the common sense approach by teaching real world application of the required material. For example, in planning a theatrical production, students were taught math by Ms.
... Read more Ellie through planning & sticking to a budget for the production. My child still talks about the budget & still uses those tools learned more than 4 yrs ago. Real life lessons like that aren't being taught today at ACS. I, too, have found the administrative staff extremely arrogant & downright rude to seasoned parents of the school. Entirely too much emphasis is being placed on only producing visual art which is the direct result of a bad decision of the board in placing the Arts Integration Director in control of the school as Executive Director. I have found that the teachers for the most part are very dedicated, however, I have found the administration to be rude, hostile and indifferent to the needs of parents. AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course. Before/After School
