I had two daughters and a son who attended Birney Middle school. I was extremely disappointed with the teachers and the safety of my children. I literally sat in the classrooms with each one of my children to get a feel of their learning environment. During that time, I witnessed children disrespecting

I witnessed my daughter be physically assaulted by one of the children during classroom time and the teacher continue with the class. I have had teachers tell me that they did not have the time to teacher my children properly. I have since removed my children from Birney. I have discussed this issue with several other parents in our district who have the same concerns and agree that Birney is not a good learning environment and not a good use of our tax dollars. My son being and advance student in his elementary for years came to Birney in the 2004-2005 school year. I am very particular about his education, therfore I seek good challenging schools for him. Birney fulfilled all my expectations with academics and extracurriculum. The environment that they provided
... Read more was a very safe, friendly, and happy environment. During the school year there was not one incident that took place at the school that put children in harms way. Like all schools, problems were very minimal and dealt with accordingly. I have had nothing but a positive experience with the teachers and administration at Birney middle school. The principal Ms. Russell is excellent, and the programs and resources that the school offers is more than enough to assist the kids in obtaining good academics to prepare them for whats to come. My child attended Binrey Middle School last year. Not only is this school safe, the teachers are wonderful. My son was challenged and worked hard while constantly receiving support from teachers, administrators and counselors. Ms. Miller's information about half of the eighth grade being potential failures

Because the Birney staff cares about their students, letters were sent home to SOME parents indictating CONCERN about their students' performance-so parents and teachers could work together to make sure no one failed. I commend Birney and think it is the BEST school in Southfield. Read less

Further, I discovered that at the end of her 8th grade semester nearly fifty percent of the eight grade students were, as they put it, 'In danger of failing.' Advanced Placement
