I have been told by several people that Mr. Bates was a wonderful principal and I really wish I had the chance to meet him. I was really eager for my children to attend Garfield this year but I find myself starting to wonder why. I feel like my opinion doesn't matter. I often feel that the staff I have ...  Read more

Garfield staff is top notch! Every teacher we have had has gone above & beyond their job duties. The principal has to be the best in the district, very approacjable and you won't find him hiding in his office, he is very involved!

The teachers do seem to be caring. However the principal always seems overwhelmed and angry about his work. I am a parent.

MEAP* Test Scores

Grade Level:

Test Year: 2013
Garfield Elementary School
Port Huron Area School District
Michigan
* In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level. Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
