Read what parents are saying about The Heights SchoolI attended from 8th grade through 12th grade and graduated in 2003. I continue to value both the education and mentorship that I received while I was there. The atmosphere of the all male student body could certainly be challenging at times with regular navigation of immature personalities, while also very supportive and healthy in building life long friendships and a sense of positive male fraternity. Class sizes ranged from 15 to 20 students. At that time, the school had just begun the Clans and events led were always a highlight for the students.

Posted by a parent on 7/3/2022High school has some good teachers, but most should not be there. Some have unrealistic expectations on the students - assigning college level material, and an outrageous amount of work that is really overwhelming and quite boring. All classes are teacher-centered and in the form of lectures (many not well planned, leaving the kids confused and frustrated). Lots of religious material incorporated in many subjects making it difficult for kids to stay motivated. Some teachers have an awful grading policy. One teacher only gives one test in the whole quarter - which is the only grade for the quarter - and he gets away with it!!The school lacks policies for teachers. They can do whatever they want. It is very difficult for kids to excel in these conditions. Some kids are nice, others are nasty bullies. One teacher is a big bully as well. He even calls the kids "dumbos". Teachers and administration do nothing about it because they believe kids need to be exposed to these things so they "learn to be tough". School has awful wifi issues. Kids online get disconnected a lot. School also chose the outdated, unfriendly "Schoology" organizational platform this year which has made things worse for the kids. Many kids get into bad habits like cheating and lying because they are desperate for help - no matter how hard they work, they only get bad grades.
Posted by a parent on 3/9/2021My son entered The Heights at Eighth Grade. We had just returned from a posting overseas, so he was excited about attending and meeting more boys his age. We were excited too. But any positive feelings about The Heights evaporated when he matriculated to the upper school. He was bullied physically and verbally by the other boys. Teachers berated him all in the name of "toughening up." When I approached the administration, the reaction was "well, boys will be boys."My son continues to attend therapy and blames me for keeping him under those conditions. Placing my son at The Heights destroyed the critical parent/child trust. Placing my son at the Heights robbed him of his self image and joy while the administration stood idly by.

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageBMES provides top-notch public education. BMES helped develop an effective IEP for our child's ADHD and speech delay, while nourishing his talents for math, reading, and music. Teachers, counsellors, and administrators are all excellent.Parent Review11mo ago - Beverly Farms Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageAs a student who went to Beverly Farms 1 year ago, I can tell how the experience went. First of all, in school there is absolutely no homework. Which in my opinion is very wrong and pathetic. Children don't learn much at school and teachers just don't stay intact with parents unless an event is/has happened. However, safety is not a concern for children and parents as they have a high/strict protocol. However, some teachers(Not all) don't handle bullying very well as they just tell the children to stop and they may or may not listen. Some staff also have trouble handling kids who don't behave well. Coming back to Family Engagement, parents don't even know what their child is learning about in school especially when they don't get graded papers back, emails, and homework.... The special education in this school is not bad as they give high support to the people who need help. Overall, the teaching part in Beverly Is not the best with a very average skill, but additional things are not that bad. Depending on your likes, I would just say Beverly Farms was a good but not outstanding school... and I would be neutral about it.Other Review3mo ago - Farmland Elementary School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy children have gone to this school for many years, but over the past few years, there have been changes to the school that have significantly lowered my opinion of the school. The current principal clearly caters to the whims of white, wealthy parents. In the past, diversity was embraced, but now it is white-washed and ignored. Children used to learn about different cultures and traditions in their classrooms. Parent volunteers would come in share about different traditions in their cultures, kids would learn about the origins of the Hanukkah dreidel, they would do a craft for the Chinese New Year, and learn about why people celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Day of the Dead, or Diwali. However, that is gone now. There are no lanterns hanging for Chinese New Year. Children no longer celebrate Halloween by wearing costumes and participating in a parade. Kids no longer pass out cards spreading kindness on Valentine’s Day or do traditional holiday crafts, such as decorating boxes to collect Valentines. Classroom parties are on random days of the year and devoid of food (presumably because parents of wealthy kids think that their kids don’t need more sweets). This, of course, ignores the fact that cupcakes and candy are a treat for kids whose families who can’t afford them. These changes were supposedly made because Farmland is a diverse community and the school is trying to accommodate all families, but by ignoring cultural traditions, the opportunity to teach and embrace the traditions of others is lost. Kids are left to think that cultural traditions are things that you hide from others, because others may not like them. This year, they cancelled the open house for parents to come see what their kids do in the classroom during the school day. The announcement of the open house cancellation was made the day beforehand without explanation or consideration of the fact that some working parents took the day off work to come to the open house. They seem to assume that most parents who come to the open house don't work or have flexible work schedules. The school has a number of good teachers and overall, I have been happy with most of them. However, some of the good teachers have left to teach at other schools. The teachers are often the ones who have to announce and implement changes to school policies, and sometimes they seem to be left doing the dirty work of implementing policies and changes that are unlikely to be favorably received by parents at Farmland.Parent Review5mo ago - Geneva Day School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI would like to share my experience with the International German School at Washington DC. In my opinion, there were some areas that could be improved. I noticed occasional instances where professionalism among the staff could have been better maintained, including instances of raised voices. Additionally, there were a few incidents where some students displayed behavior that lacked respect towards adults. It would be beneficial for the school to focus on fostering a culture of respect. There were also occasions where certain staff members seemed to exhibit an attitude problem and treated support staff, such as custodians and lunchroom monitors, with a lack of respect. Clear guidelines for professional behavior and communication would greatly benefit the overall atmosphere. While the school charges a considerable tuition fee, I felt that the educational experience provided did not always meet the expectations set by the cost. Some students seemed to lack discipline and disregarded authority, which impacted the learning environment. It was noticeable that some teachers and principals were quite friendly with students, even during lunchtime. This blurred the lines of authority and created an unclear boundary between students and staff.I would caution prospective employees and parents to carefully consider their options before choosing this school. While I cannot speak to the motivations of the administration, I believe it is essential for them to prioritize both the financial aspect and the quality of education. It would be beneficial for the school to focus on establishing a more welcoming and supportive environment. In conclusion, I believe that the International German School at Washington DC has room for improvement in terms of staff professionalism, student behavior, and the overall educational experience. I hope that my feedback is taken constructively and contributes to the betterment of the school.Other Review10mo ago - Norwood School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageNorwood School has been an extraordinary environment for my child's academic journey, providing a multitude of opportunities for her to shine academically. One remarkable aspect of Norwood is its commitment to recognizing and nurturing each student's unique talents. For instance, my child has a remarkable aptitude for writing, and Norwood has provided a platform for her to excel further in this through various events and opportunities to share her work. She has written stories from scratch with illustrations, and been encouraged to put them together into various books which were then placed in her class library, where her peers could read them. This not only bolstered her confidence but also honed her writing skills even further. The impact of being known at Norwood has been profound on my child's educational experience. The school's dedication to understanding each student's strengths and areas for improvement has set the stage for transformative growth. One remarkable way this personalized approach benefits their students is through tailored instruction. Norwood provides encouragement and instruction specific to each child, which is truly amazing. This not only instills a sense of responsibility and pride in the children at Norwood, but also enhances their leadership skills. The teachers at Norwood have consistently demonstrated flexibility and responsiveness in nurturing growth amongst their students. Teachers will provide one on one support whenever it is needed, and they will work with your child specifically to challenge their strengths further and address weaknesses. They adjust their teaching approaches when necessary and they incorporate visual aids and real-life examples to help build children’s confidence and understanding of concepts.Norwood truly excels in active learning. An example of active learning is where children perform hands-on science projects where they build working models of various concepts, encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration among students. They are encouraged to think critically to figure out things on their own, which in turn builds their leadership skills further.Norwood is a truly remarkable and exceptional school and creates such a warm environment for learning. We are so happy to be part of such a wonderful community!!Parent Review6mo ago - Harbor School
