As the first grade teacher, last year my students hosted the Jamaican ambassador and consular officials from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Japan. They celebrated the Chinese New Year dancing through the cafeteria under a Chinese dragon they had made in art class. They lunched at my home and snacked in a 50 foot tower constructed by a German immigrant in Burtonsville. They hosted their moms and grandmothers for a poetry party; they published a class book. They are exposed not only to the educational fundamentals, but also literature, cultures of the world, and how to be prepared for the global educational revolution that is currently taking place. My children are learning how to be prepared for future educational requirements through test preparation & note taking, how to be an orgianized learner, and how to accept and respect others who may not look or act or believe in the things they believe in. My child came from a Montessori background. The teacher and teaching specialists at Newport were sensitive to the fact he had never studied for, nor taken an exam. They worked with him to bring him up to the level and standards that Newport expects from all its students. In a class of 12 students,

I am a past parent of Newport. My son attended K-8 and received a foundation which he still relys on today. Lower School provided the basics, independence, and good study habits. Middle School offered advanced levels of math, enhanced writing skills and opened the door to new languages. Homework

The Newport School leaves much to be desired. Although the children have multiple classes with different teachers, they will often be taught be watching videos, not only in their main class, but in music class, spanish, and media. The teachers are allowed to teach as they wish without any direction
... Read more from the administration. The children's time is highly structured, leaving no time for creativity, or imaginative play. This is true even for the young 3 year olds. All class time is directed by the teacher and his/her plan without giving the children opportunities to explore and create. Also, there is very little teacher/parent communication. ... Read more 'cool to be smart.' Academic achievement is valued and recognized. There is a strong language and culture curriculum. My first grader after two months knows about the Middle East, counts in Urdu (the language of Pakistan), and understands Ramadan. The K-4 science lab -- staffed by an award winning teacher -- features animals that they handle (snakes, chinchilla, ferret, gerbils, etc.) Both of our boys were thrilled to put on rubber gloves and handle a goat heart recently. The science teacher brings in people with disabilities and the children interview them and become sensitized. It's a very special place. Read less

Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level.
