My son will not be returning. The teachers do their best. The administrators are out of touch using a lot of yelling and negativity. The reward system is almost non-existent. Virtually no communication between the school and parents. The rules are either not enforced or are enforced with favoritism.
... Read more The boys take advantage of the rules because there are a lot of threats and no actions. Hillside is a school that accepts the students public schools reject. Teachers are not equipped to handle the myriad of issues the student population has. They are far from what they advertise. They recruit athletes who get a free ride. Read less

We live outside of the country and we chose Hillside school first of all because we felt the pastoral care was excellent and we wanted to be assured that our son was well looked after. Our son has learning substantial learning differences and he has been given the extra support needed to make him a

My son is a 5-day boarder in eighth grade at Hillside. He was required to read three books over the summer and review them. For extra credit over Thanksgiving and Christmas break he did book reports for extra credit. He studies Latin at Hillside (not offered at our public middle school). He is also taking

My son is mature for his age and we are not the only ones who notice. The parents of his home friends see him as a role model. His friends at home, like him, are all honor role students. My son is mildly ADHD but now has the study habits, maturity, confidence and moral foundation to succeed in any academic environment. Visit Hillside. See for yourself. Read less

My 6th grader just finished his first semester at Hillside -- so far, so good. He's a 5 day boarder, and he is very happy there. He is mildly ADD, and he was doing OK in the public schools, but he really benefits from some extra structure and support. The big things appear to be in place. The teaching

Read more is high quality and the academic program seems strong (while it is beyond silly to judge a school by the amount of homework given, my son's load is quantitatively and qualitatively equivalent to the public school he attended last year). The days are very active, with plenty of choices for non-academic development. It seems a disciplined environment, although the staff is generally friendly and nurturing and the kids have fun together. Overall, I'm impressed. The weakness really is communication. The school tries but just doesn't get it right. Read less

If you're looking for a challenging, grade appropriate, academic environment for your child, Hillside is not the school for you. One of the biggest complaints by many families is the lack of homework. The kids might be happy with this, but unfortunately this means Hillside students fall further behind
... Read more each year they attend the school. By ninth grade, many of the graduates are a full year behind regular public school ninth grade and have to repeat ninth grade at their new school. By 7th or 8th grade, many students who transfer out have to attend summer school or get a tutor to get them up to speed. Hillside brags about the high staff to student ratio. Problems can rarely be resolved easily. Parents have no idea who to contact and Hillside staff tend to be fairly unresponsive. My advice - keep looking. There are much better schools out there. The last review doesn t really give a clear picture of Hillside. While the majority of the students have an LD or some social issue (much higher than admissions indicates), some students attend because they do better in a school with a small class size or thrive in a structured environment. Unfortunately
... Read more these students often receive little attention as they don t need tutorials and their teachers must attend to the many behavior issues of their peers. As the school seems determined to grow, things probably won t improve anytime soon. Thus, the comment that Hillside accepts too many of the wrong students to fill enrollment is probably accurate. Teachers do seem overwhelmed by the number of students with problems and appear ill-equipped/trained to handle them. As a result the entire class often suffers and the teacher/student turnover rate is high. Hillside School s vision is to be applauded, but they aren t there yet. Read less

Hillside provides a wonderful, structured community and learning environment for boys, both traditional learners and kids who have stuggled elsewhere.
