Mrs. Gray and the rest of the staff at Caldwell County Primary are wonderful. They really care for the children who attend their school. My son is going to be a 3rd grader next school year and I'm really going to miss all of the staff at the Primary School. I know my son will miss them too.

As a parent and a previous primary teacher (not in this school system) I have been extremely impressed with the school's curriculum. As a parent I had concerns about my child entering school for the first time. My main concern was the fear of him getting bored (entering Kindergarten, he knew his alphabet,

As principal of Caldwell County Primary School, I disagree wholeheartedly with this parent's perception of our school. First, we genuinely love our children. It is much more than an 'appearance.' I have seen staff members go out of their way to provide for our students. They spend their own money
... Read more every year to provide the 'extras' that help our students learn. It doesn't stop there. I have countless stories about the generosity of different staff members at Christmas, on birthdays, and other special occassions. All the while, these people are doing it quietly. Neither the parents nor the children know who the benefactors are. You see, we get all the children of the county. In regards to socioeconomic status, we love the poorest as well as the richest. We love the children whose parents are there loving them each night, as well as the children whose parents neglect or abuse them. Some children fail to understand the concept of two plus two, because they are consumed with worry about what their parents are going to do to them, to each other, or to someone else they love when they arrive home. The point is this. We take our roles as educators seriously. Maslow's hiearchy of needs clearly states you cannot advance to higher order learning until the basic necessities are first met (i.e. food, shelter, a sense of safety, etc.). In regards to curriculum, we are a Reading First school. We wrote and were awarded a competitive grant in the amount of $1,160,000.00. We believe reading on grade level is critical for the success of the student in all other subject areas. Because of this focus on reading, 85% of our students are on or above grade level, and 69% of them scored above the 75th percentile on the Group Reading and Diagnostic Evaluation (GRADE) assessment. We were one of 13 Reading First schools who surpassed the Commissioner of Education's goal of having 75% at grade level. Our kindergarten, first, and second grade students take the Group Mathematics and Diagnostic Evaluation (GMADE) assessment three times per year. Our spring 2007 scores showed CCPS students performing at the 65th percentile, 15 percentile points above the 50th percentile, deemed grade level by the Commissioner of Education. We are not content, though, with our mathematics instruction. Our Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) has mathematics as one of our components. We have included activities to ensure a solid foundation of skills from one grade to the other. We have included activities to further teacher professional development in mathematics instruction. Parents can view the CSIP anytime. It is in the front lobby of the school and also on the district webpage. It can be accessed by going to www.caldwell.kyschools.us. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and select our schools improvement plan. I invite all parents and community members to be a part of the decision making process by serving on committees. We have five standing committees: Curriculum/Instrcutional Practices; Literacy; School Relations; Technology; and Wellness. Parents are also encouraged to attend our School-Based Decision Making Council meetings the first Monday of every month at 4:30 PM in the school's library. I promise we will do more than 'humor' parents. We will put you to work alongside dedicated professionals who want the best for each of our students and for our school. Read less

While this school appears to truly care about children, the curriculum is very poor even to statewide standards. The math programs are seriously lacking any challenge for the students, while the english curriculum seems to be all they care about. Glad my son can read two plus two, unfortunately he doesn't
