I am a graduate of Chesterton High School and have had three children graduate from CHS.. CHS is not the same school that I attended but lets look at the reason why. When I was in school the parents supported the school, and the expectation was that you attended school to get an education. This is

If your child cannot find his niche at CHS it is because he/she isn't looking and or they are not encouraged to do so by their parents. Oh, my oldest graduated from college recently and is now teaching. He will tell you that he was more prepared for college than 90% of his classmates in college. The same is true of my two other children in college. Great job CHS! Read less

This school is one of the best I've seen. At least architecturally. It's wide and diverse and it holds some of the best extracurriculars. Their Debate team is one of the best in the state and they seem to be very dedicated to it.

This school is horrible. I came from an inter-city school in a big city and had better teachers and administrators than this school or district. Discipline is inconsistent. There are a few wonderful teachers but most want nothing to do with helping students. This school really needs a wake up call and

I do believe the School is above average. I was happy with most of the Teachers. I believe the Principal is an upstanding person. Having just has two seniors in a row graduate... The quality of teaching at CHS is so inconsistent. Our son has had some truly great teachers and, unfortunately, truly bad ones. I guess what was most heart breaking this year was the letter sent home at the end of the year telling us of all the teachers retiring. It seems like the best ones, the ones

We have had two children attend CHS. Our daughter was a Merit Scholar several years ago (she finished 3rd in her class) and our son attended last year and was in the GT (Gifted and Talented) track. Her experience was good, not great. But our son s experience was quite disappointing. We have found

English is taught better in 7th and 8th grades at CMS and was a step down for our son at CHS. We are so concerned about both academics and safety at CHS that we are sending our third child [elsewhere] as an out-of-district student and will pay the $2700 tuition. We have since taken our son out of CHS and sent him to a College Prep school with a much more rigorous and teacher involved environment. Read less

I have had two children graduate from this H.S. I am really disappointed with the imbalance of punishment here, the athletes are the untouchables, while the average kids seem to have all rules enforced. Some teachers are wonderful, while others, most should have retired years ago,or are there only for

Additionally, the idea of 'Alternative school' is in my opinion is stupid, just another point that many teachers do not want to do their jobs (yes the kids are to blame also, but they need to be motivated also). CHS is not the same HS it once was when I went here 25+ yrs ago, and it's really sad, because Chesterton in general is a wonderful community and it should have a wonderful HS to show for it. * In 2008-2009 Indiana used the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus (ISTEP+) assessment to test students in grades 3 through 10 in English/language arts and math, and in grades 5 and 7 in science. The ISTEP+ is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Indiana. High school students are required to pass the grade 10 ISTEP+ to receive a high school diploma. The goal is for all students to score at the passing level on the test.
