12 Parent Reviews for Giant City Elementary School

Look at the reviews, beginning from 2007 with 5 stars and now with low stars, this place has gone downhill. Fired the art teacher, fired the music teacher. The school is strapped. Overcrowded classrooms and stressed out teachers that I have witnessed yell and scream and belittle children. One experience ...  Read more

All my children attended Giant City. It is a small country school with lots of politics. Due to a decline in student population and funding, several classes are being combined to create multi-age classrooms with two grade levels per classroom. This tactic increases classroom size and complexity. ...  Read more

Overall this is a great school. I would recommend it to anyone moving into the district. My child attend K-8 and did really well there. We just got a new Superintendent/Principal so everything is in a transition period but feel that everything will settle in before too long. There is always petty ...  Read more

Giant City School is a rare find in the Carbondale, IL area. It is small school that will grow in classroom size in the 2013/2014 school year. It offers mostly female teachers and more male teachers are beginning to come in. The Superintendent is an asset to the school and there are newly elected ...  Read more

My children attended GCS for four years. This school is ruled by small town politics. The newly hired superintendent is weak and caters to a small group of the elementary grade teachers and the board members. In public, the board members say their job is to approve the superintendent s recommendations, ...  Read more

This school has seriously lacked leadership within the last few years. It appears that there are a few people running the school--who have no business doing so and the administration does nothing to stop them. It is not a warm and inviting place to be--unless you are the select few who run the place. ...  Read more

For years I thought Giant City was the best school to have a child in. This year has shown me otherwise. If you are not among the rich and elite your child does not matter. They let teachers go that push kids to be the best they can be because during sports these kids still have work to do and if ...  Read more

This school encompasses kindergarten through 8th grade, all housed in the same building. Kindergarten through 4th grade is considered elementary school. Fifth through eighth grades are considered middle school. I have a child in elementary school and one in middle school. With regard to the elementary ...  Read more

The rating is not of the people, per se, (there are plenty of good people at GCS), but of the quality of our experience there. Instructional systems (esp in beginning math, reading) are not selected based on sound data (even in these days of "evidenced based practice"). Art has been eliminated from ...  Read more

This is an excellent school. My daughter has attended K-4 so far and we have been very pleased with the faculty and staff at this school. The parents are great as well. I wouldn't want to send my kid anywhere else.
