Though North Cedar isn't completely perfect it's still a great place to get an education. I've traveled to many places and I never had better teachers than the ones I have at North Cedar or as many opportunities to get involved with so many extracurricular activities.

I am a parent of 2 students, the last to graduate this year. I am ranking the administration. I have watched as North Cedar has slipped in ranks with each passing superintendent, principal and change of the guard. They have a guidance counselor who has been there far to long and is not 'in tune' with
... Read more the kids. She tells students to 'get on line' to get the scholarship apps and never seems to have time to assist them. The school rates the GPA on a 4.33 and has to convert them to 4.0 for colleges. We discovered the counselor was allowing a student aid to plug in the conversion with a formula. When I checked my student's GPA it was being submitted to colleges lower that it actually was. If I could do it over again, I would either home school or send my kids to another school. Read less

May 2003 rating is speaking sour grapes. I think North Cedar has a faculty that for the most part work together and care about all of their students. That same vocal teacher has half the high school students in choir, and doesn't cut anyone out. All the kids are welcome, even students who aren't in any

Students at North Cedar High School have the opportunity to become as involved with the school as they want. They have opportunities to play sports, Mock Trial, Quiz Bowl, be part of one of the best cheerleading squads in the state (2nd place at Nationals in 2003), drama, individual and group speech,
... Read more choir, band, Peers, and the list goes on. Academically, our curriculum offers high level courses to prepare for college and vocational training. Grade points averages are based on a high scale (92% is a B+ for example). North Cedar has its problems, but it is a safe environment with most teachers really caring about the students and tend to be fair. Read less

North Cedar has teachers who play favorites, such as with their own children in their classes (mainly the vocal music instructor). Those students always get the lead roles, the solos, the training, the chances. The art teacher tends to lean towards these students as well in lead rolls in plays and
... Read more speech events. Sports is overemphasized...music and drama are underemphasized...all due to parental backing for sports, which has been the same for years. Band was dropped from 5th grade all together a few years ago, meaning that North Cedar is always 1 year behind other schools in instrument training and band participation in contests and events. There are some good teachers there too...but too many who play favorites or judge students if they aren't interested in sports. Read less
* In 2007-2008 Iowa used the Iowa Test of Educational Development (ITED) to test students in grade 11 in reading and math. The scores reflect the performance of students enrolled for the full academic year. Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Adult Education Classes
Programs offering GED or equivalent courses for adults within regular schools, whether classes are held during evening or daytime schedules.
English as Second Language
English language classes for students whose first language is not English.
