My 5th grader came here in October of her 3rd grade year. I also have a daughter in Kindergarten. I was very nervous about the school. Before coming here you hear the worst things about the education in Hawaii. I can tell you that Wheeler has an amazing staff. My daughters are comfortable there and

I feel that the parents that have complaints are usually the ones that do not take the time to actually realize what is going on with their kids. I have never had any issue that has not been immediately resolved by a staff member. Their education, safety, and comfort is ALWAYS first with each person at Wheeler. We will all be sad when they have to leave this great school! Read less

Teachers seem nice, curriculum does seem to be on the weaker side. YOU MUST MONITOR YOUR CHILDS PROGRESS, teachers wont' come to you until conference time. Both elem. & middle schools will listen to your concerns, seem agreeable.. but action is another ballpark. GO OVER HOMEWORK WITH KID, listen to how they are doing. YOU must help them where the school lacks here.I'm confident with some outside workbooks, parents on the ball & vocal, children who have someone to talk to when there are problems. Children can succeed here. The school also does a great job of teaching: respect, authority, citizenship and a few other charactor traits. They also just implemented a new garden.. children are excited. Read less

I have mixed feelings about this school. I am very happy with the teachers my children have received, however feel that the curriculum is poor. My 5th grader does not write in cursive at all. My children have attended Wheeler for the past 3 years and we have been disappointed with many things. First of all, every time I have given ideas of things they could improve on, the administration usually agrees with me but doesn't implement the idea. Also, I have complained about a couple of teachers

I feel that the academics is mostly for the below average child and the above average children are not being challenged. Most importantly, parents have offered to volunteer in the classroom but most of the teachers do not want them in the classroom. Overall, I feel that the faculty doesn't understand families in the military and it should be made into a DODD's school, with only military children allowed to attend. Read less

There are after school tutoring programs currently available, and unlike other local elementary schools, Wheeler has programs like PE, Music, etc as well as intramural sport programs like Flag Football and Basketball. As for the downsides, unfortunately class sizes are large, there could be better access to computers and technology in my opinion and parent involvment is dismal! I would give Wheeler Elementary an overal grade of B+! Read less
