As a parent, I was very impressed with the recent May Day program. Never have I seen such a performance by the children at Koloa School relating to the hula and music of ancient and modern Hawaii. ... Read more to move to the outer island but decided to stay in Koloa simply because of the school. Our child enjoys the school and it's activities. Koloa school is on the cutting edge of technology in the classroom and we as parents enjoy having that available for all the students to increase their skills. Koloa Elementary School is well on its way to being one of the best schools on Kauai. My oldest child started Kindergarten at Koloa in 2004. ... Read more very few parents attended. No wonder the school had a bad reputation! Since Mrs. Debbie Lindsey became our principal the school has improved in so many ways. The school made it's AYP targets 2 years in a row, student enrollment has increased, parent involvement has grown enormously, we have a fully functioning and very active PTA, and in the 2008-2009 school year they added many after-school activites which are very popular with the students. Miss Shigematsu, the 3rd grade teacher, is one of the most gifted teachers I have ever met. She is capable of challenging and driving the students beyond the norm, while she is kind, patient and caring. She is one of Koloa Elementary School's best assets.

Another school year has gone by, and another principal change occurred, actually two since last May. The second change was due to terminal illness of the new one who seemed to have a good plan for the school. However, it was another tedious and confusing year for parents and for my student. The

We need a principal and councilors that can devote time to get to know the our students and their individual needs. There are more teachers leaving again this year so more new teachers again next year. There is no arts program to speak of which my child would benefit much from. We need more than just testing, or children need to be nourished as individuals. We so much need a principal that listens to us as parents. Read less

Another year, another bad principal. We had a chance last spring, a new principal with a good vision for the school, however he became ill and was replaced by a principal from another island, completely out of touch with the needs of this school. Teachers and counselors are again leaving this year.

I agree that my student was tested for GT, but for 2 years there was no GT. I never really felt welcome there. They say they want parent involvement, but don't make you feel that way. There have been 3 going on 4 principals, 3 couselors, 3 Mokihana therapists, and numerous mid year teacher changes
... Read more in the past 6 years. Kids need consistancy and no wonder they aren't doing their best. Staff is trying so hard to change things for the better, but with all the staffing changes it is hard to get the kids to follow through. The main thing is they are trying so hard. Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level.
