This is an excellent school both inside and out. The teachers are eager to help and very involved with both students and parents. My child is a 3rd generation student here which I am very proud to say!

I have been a spook hill parent for seven years, my daughter just graduated from 5th grade, they have been great years, academically she did great, the teachers are wonderful, for the parent that wrote the PTO is a joke, obviously has not had experience with other schools PTO, Spook Hills PTO runs great
... Read more and offers the children a lot of extras, for instance Caspers Birthday is free and is funded by the PTO, I also have another child at Spook Hill and would not change schools.I am glad it did not go charter. Spook Hill has had a change over in administration over the years, we now have a good principle and an assistant principle that is strong where discipline is concerned, I would recommend Spook Hill to any parent. I was very distressed about my daughter attending Spook Hill. Then she was blessed with a very wonderful kindergarten teacher. I am as involved with my daughter's school as I can be with a three year old at home. As the year progressed I started to notice little things that were a little distrubing

This school has improved tremendusly over the past few years. It's a good thing they never joined the Charter School system because it has been a disaster. The teachers are excellent, especially the reading specialist. She has helped many to catch up to their reading level. Both of my children went

I am very disappointed that the Principal has allowed this school to deteriorate to the lowest of lows in just a short period of time. For example: * The entire PTO board has resigned * The entire volunteer staff has resigned * The entire SAC committee has resigned * Teacher morale is at

Her favorite line is 'That is an administrative decision.' * At the last PTO meeting there were only 5 attendees consisting of three teachers, my wife, and myself. * The principal is a 'ghost' in the school (no pun intended). I visit the school several days each week and I have never seen her outside of the school office. Read less

My oldest child graduated from Spook Hill in May of 2003 and I have another child currently in the third grade. I was distressed to see the comments posted here by another parent. Under the guidance of the current principal, the school has improved from a Florida State C to a B grade. I have
... Read more found this principal to be a person of vision, who cares about students, parents and academic achievement. While Spook Hill, like any school, has both strengths and weaknesses, overall I sincerely believe it to be the strongest school in the City of Lake Wales. The teachers currently at Spook Hill are mostly caring committed professionals who want the best for their students. Communication, flexibility, and cooperation between individual teachers and some parents could use improvement. As to the local charter school vote, I too was disappointed with the teachers overwhelming rejection, but that does not at this time reflect poorly upon the performance of the school which has improved each of the five years I have had children at the school. I hope that this issue will be revisited at a future time. I believe there is room for positive change in our PE program. However the dance instruction, which culminates in a Rhythms Program each year, is the shining star of the PE program and teaches skills that can be built upon for a lifetime of physical fitness. I am an advocate for my children and an activist at the school who takes up issues and concerns as they arise with the teachers or the administration. I believe that is more appropriate than bashing the school on a public forum for the mistakes of a few. Read less

My child has just moved on to 6th grade. Our experience with Spook Hill was not good. She had 3 principals in 6 years. This was very confusing for the children. The first principal was great the 2nd was awful! and the third was no better then the second. I feel most teachers at Spook Hill need to retire

I do feel that was a mistake. I also wish I had sent her to private school rather then Spook Hill. I know personally of at least 4 families who are looking for other schools for their children to attend next year. They are willing to send their children to C & D schools, just so they don't have to attend that school next year. I also think it was a huge mistake for the teacher to vote down charter schools! That just proves how uninformed these 'teachers' choose to be. When the studies prove that Spook Hill is the one elementary school that would benifit the most from that move! The only thing my child learned in the physical education program is to dance. They are unwilling to teach physical education unless you consider the bunny hop physical education. Read less
* In 2008-2009 Florida used the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) to test students in grades 3 through 10 in reading and math; in grades 4, 8 and 10 in writing; and in grades 5, 8 and 11 in science. The FCAT Writing results are displayed separately on GreatSchools profiles. The FCAT is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Florida. The FCAT has 5 achievement levels, with level 1 being the lowest and level 5 the highest. Florida considers scores of level 3 and higher to be on or above grade level. The goal is for all students to score at or above level 3.
