After observing the tides and finding and recording man-made objects on the beach, a given morning might cumulate in writing poetry by the ocean cliff. In the afternoon, students may work on sculpting a sea animal, which will become a prop in a new play. The school's location on spacious grounds, within easy walking distance to parks and beaches is unsurpassed. Some original teachers, contributors since the school's earlier Bohemian beginnings, are retiring. New teachers seem to possess strong academic credentials. GW is a fabulous school. It has a great blend of passionate/compassionate faculty and academic challenge. The teachers get to know your child and they really honor the student s unique perspective while setting appropriately high expectations. ... Read more local business, take a tour, interview the owner, and write a paper. What a great way to get kids invested in their work! (It helps that there are only 14 kids in her class.) The gorgeous life lab garden and marine science program take advantage of the campus location, just steps from the beach. Yes, we are spoiled! All students take art, music, PE, Spanish and computer. Sports teams begin in 5th and everyone who wants to play does. I'm so grateful that my kids go to a school where they're known, valued and encouraged to give their very best. Read less

Not the school it once was. Leadership has declined in the recent past. Teachers are having a faster rate of turnover once the 'old timers' (and great), teaching staff leaves. Science past that spotty at best, lots of movie watching. Math for middle school less challenging than AP classes at public schools. Great school community. Great school values. Great place for a kid to make friendships with other great kids. Kid's learn much more than academics in school. Gateway teaches kids how to think and act responsibly to their teachers, parents, peers and themselves. Gateway students learn to care about the

They learn science in the garden (organic) and in the ocean where they can see, touch and experience it. There is a full Arts programme and also the wonderful Life Lab, where they learn about nature in the field, growing their own vegetables and studying plants. The atmosphere is one of kindliness, respect and calm. Everyday I take my son to school I feel grateful that he has such a nurturing environment in which to spend some of the most significant years of his life. Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course.
