... Read more poster wrote about flaunting of wealth and "alpha kids." My kids felt well-treated and well-accepted by their peers. Both kids in classes separated by a few years felt their peers would gladly help them out with a ride or with homework, even if those peers weren't their best buddies. Another poster wrote about the unevenness of teaching, which I think is true - at MA and anywhere else. The first kid was able to advise the second kid about which teachers to avoid, if possible. Yes there are drugs, and yes there are parents who supply alcohol, and your kid is bound to find drugs, on any campus, if that is his or her thing. This is a nice school with nice kids. It's not a perfect school. No school is. Read less

... Read more are extraordinarily wealthy and socially connected, and/or highly competitive in athletics, academics, and even in the arts. There is very little socioeconomic or racial diversity; even a middle class kid feels "poor" at MA. I believe that MA does very little to help support kids who are struggling to fit in, having a difficult adolescence, or who are not developmentally ready for the academic rigor of the MA program. Teachers have "Tutorial" time available to help students, but some of the teachers are cold and demanding, launching their college level expectations on the students. There is a very real drug problem at MA. The open campus is conducive to student drug use during the school day. The administration and teachers seem to ignore this problem with rare exceptions. The school deceptively markets itself as being fun, friendly, and supportive. This was not our experience. Read less

It's unrealistic to believe that cliques, drug and alcohol use won't be prominent at any school: private or public. It has been the perfect school for my son, who is a soccer player and a jazz musician. Our challenge was finding a school with challenging, college preparatory academics, which allowed him room to pursue these other activities at a high level. We found it in MA, as well as a welcoming, warm and supportive

My daughter was the target of 'mean girls' here as a freshman and the administration did nothing about it, other than to suggest 'counseling' (my daughter had never had a problem socially before going to this school). I heartily agree with the last commenter - it is a school of alphas.

The school has a bias towards extroverted kids. The thoughtful, studious, quiet students either never make it through admissions (probably because they don't have the 'gift of gab') and if they do, they are not seen as 'leaders'. There is a such a big emphasis on leadership and participating in a
... Read more vast array of activities. The less noticeable strengths that many introverts have don't feel to be valued. Many of the so called leaders at MA are actually very social partiers. We worry that our introverted child has been made to feel inadequate and like there is something wrong with her by being lost in a sea of extroverts. For a school that values diversity, I hope the tide turns. On the plus side, the school has outstanding teachers and curriculum and if you do have a child who is interested in loads activities, they have many wonderful programs to offer. Read less

It's an incredible feeling to finally not be the smartest one in the class like I was in middle school - it pushes me to my limits to keep up with others, and because I have done so I have grown an immense amount in my four years here. I feel as though the thinking, questioning, and creating happens so much that it seems as though it isn't. In every class I have smart and engaged teachers giving me assignments that need creativity and application of knowledge instead of just favoring rote work and regurgitation. Read less

AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course.
