My daughter is just completing three years at Castillero. I have to say that I have been underwhelmed by the academics in general (with a sprinkling of really good teachers as the exception to the rule), but in my view, the problem lies with the lack of 'tracking' at the middle school level throughout
... Read more SJUSD. I don't think any other school in the district is better to a degree that would convince me to give up the things I value about this school. The emphasis on the arts and the presence of a wide range of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds both contribute to a culture where all different kinds of kids are able feel accepted and appreciated for who they are. At this developmental stage, having my child in a school culture that I can 'get behind' in this way is a top priority. But better 'core' classes would've been nice... Read less

My child has attended the Castillero Special Ed classes for 3 years now and has improved 100%. She entered 6th grade from one of the districts worst elementary schools reading at a 1-2nd grade level and is reading now at a level where high school should not be a problem. She has confessed that she could
... Read more be herself at this school and that she is not looked down upon by any student in the general poplulation because she attends special ed . Her self esteem has gone through the roof. She has a 4.0 GPA and is very active in sports. We are definately not from 'this side of the tracks' but have not experienced any negativeness because of it. The uniform policy is great and have seen no gang problems. She has friends from every income level and none have excluded her for being in spec ed. Read less

I go to Castillero Middle School and I absolutely love it there! Not only can I do great in school with helpful and suppotive teachers and staff, but I can also excell in the arts. Not many schools have the programs given at this school which makes it even better. There are many many choices for electives

Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level.
