Her teacher is teaching in ways never used at her previous school and we can already see improvements in her reading and approach to homework. This is a small school with a caring staff. Sunnyside has amazing intimacy between kids, parents, teachers and the principal, and also a grand vision for how to become the best school it can possibly be. Arts, science, book-learning and diverse cultural celebration are all thriving at sunnyside.... my kindergartener doesn't tell me too much

This is our second year at Sunnyside Elementary, our son has a FANTASTIC first grade teacher who is inspiring and planning all manner of interesting field trips. Parents were also just informed that Sunnyside's API scores jumped 68 points in one year to 813! This is due to the hard work of the teachers,

Our daughter is in Kindergarten at Sunnyside and we have been incredibly happy with the warm and welcoming community, high caliber of caring and committed teachers and a straight-shooting principal. ... Read more strong Science curriculum with ongoing in class experiments and monthly field trips, P.E. twice per week, music, movement and more. There's also a very committed group of parents who are planning and launching a Garden Program at the school in the Spring. I would recommend this school to anyone who wants a small, friendly neighborhood school, and who wants to contribute their time to making this school even better in the coming years. Sunnyside was not on my list of 7 schools. Because of the crummy system in SF, we were given Sunnyside. It turned out to be a lucky break. The (3) kindergarten classes have huge parental involvement. For example, 10 out of 20 parents showed up for a wednesday 9:30am science walk for a kindergarten
... Read more class. Incredible parent involvement. Another example is the saturday kindergarten classroom cleaning which 4 fathers and 5 mothers volunteered their weekend time. Other new changes to the school that are parent based involve a lunch literacy program and an incredible garden project, to name only a few. Sunnyside does not tour well but it is a wonderful neighborhood school. I would say to all the parents that are in the position I was in last year, put Sunnyside on the top of your list if you are a motivated forward thinking parent and join us. Read less

Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course.
