My daughter is just finishing 2nd Grade at Spring Valley Science School in San Francisco. This is the most outstanding public elementary school I have heard about or experienced. Spring Valley is celebrating it's 156th anniversary, being the oldest elementary school still in operation in California.
... Read more The Principal is extraordinary with ties throughout the community which enhances the students experiences. The teachers are also incredible. They are all extremely knowledgable and creative, bringing all this into the classroom engaging the students, making learning exciting. Science is the focus with reading the very basic. There is year round homework with the expectation of parent involvement to what ever extent they can. My family has attended SF Public schools for 3 generations and this is by far the best elementary school around. Read less

This is a great school. My son is currently getting a great education. The school has a wonderful principal who stresses homework and reading. She has hired the most wonderful group of teachers.

My son has been going to Spring Valley for three years and I am very happy with the education he is receiving there. He has received a solid base of knowledge as well as excellent study habits. At first the amount of homework was daunting but it has certainly paid off in his reading and writing ability.
... Read more The teachers are experienced, dedicated and work well together. The principal is a strong leader who pushes for excellence while at the same time has creates a positive, safe environment for the children. In addition, the school takes the kids on wonderful field trips and takes full advantage of programs offered through the museums, university fellowships and San Francisco Arts organizations. Because the school is largely made of students from low-income families, there is not the parent involvement you might see in other schools however the students are excelling according to their test scores. This is a demanding, but very rewarding Nob Hill neighborhood school celebrating 115 years of history next year. ... Read more administrator who magically finds funding for her kids out of nowhere. (the truth is, she s a tireless fundraiser via grants, gifts, fundraisers, wherever!) The teachers are dedicated, creative and hard working. They obviously have an unreserved commitment to the children, which makes the atmosphere of the school wonderful. The school is big on field trips! It s wonderful to see children challenged and inspired by visiting great places such as Stanford, UC, the Zoo, museums and on and on. Parent participation is integral to the functioning of the school. Awareness, volunteerism, participation and communication are actively sought from the parents. Read less

Advanced Placement
