Each child is different and each teacher has their own area of focus and in the end my children had a great experience at Commodore and developed a true love of learning. As an active parent I have been appreciated and engaged. The benefit of attending a neighborhood school is that your children's friends are nearby and you are not crossing town to get together- to have that advantage and have a great school - we have been truly under a lucky star. I am a parent of a 1st grader at the school. We have had a wonderful experience so far. The teachers are warm, caring and committed to teaching the students. The Parents Club is very active and raises a lot of $$ for the school which helps pay for alot of extras at the school. The school grounds

Sloat has 330 students. About 25% of the parents are very involved. Additional parent volunteers help out with the major events like the Spring Festival and the Sloat stride. ... Read more learning garden program that will only get better as the Prop A Green Schoolyards initiative kicks in during the fall of 2006. There is a lot to like at Commodore Sloat. There are good quality academic programs as evidenced by the consistently high API scores. The new principal is working to increase community engagement by varying the meeting times for community meetings and introducing new programs such as Family Math night. And the facilities are being upgraded with ramps and bathroom remodels to comply with the Americans with Disabilities act as well as new playground equipment. Read less

The only thing I wished I saw more of was student work on display. It was difficult to get an idea of the academic level of the curriculum that is taught on a day to day basis. Advanced Placement
