My two younger sons enjoy their weekly music classes, trips to the computer lab, PE classes, Run for Life fitness program, and so much more. It's great to be part of a school where the student's needs come first, there is a focus on community service, and the positive parent involvement makes you feel like your child is part of a really large family. I have experienced nothing but positive experiences at this school. The teachers that both of my daughters' (Kinder and 3rd gr. GATE) have been wonderful; all the way from Kinder through 3rd grade. I have heard that 4th grade is equally good and that the trip on the Star of India is an extra bonus

The parents are very involved, the office staff and Principal is always available and kind, and the teaching staff is fabulous. I am a teacher with 18 years experience, at a different site, so when I see a good school, staff, and parental support I recognize it. I am proud to send my children to Loma Portal. Excellent quality of education. Would like to see more parents volunteer, seems to be the same ones volunteering. Teachers are very intuned with the student's needs. Office staff is exceptional.

This is our 5th year here. We love it! My parental experience ranges from special education to gifted. My assessment of this school is: teachers=superb, principal=wonderful, parents=involved, Loma Portal=success. New Updates for 2005-06: GATE: Teachers are expanding our successful gifted program.
... Read more (4th grade) Social Studies and Science are to be added to our Oral Language, Language Arts and Math enhanced curriculum. We have a very successful program and with incredible teachers. Reading Teacher: A pullout program for students who are struggling in reading. Music: We have started an articulated K-4 Music Program. (The district/VAPA introduces instruments in 4th grade.) The music teacher will also support 4th grade students in choir who do not wish to play an instrument. Our feeder schools are strong in music also. Computer Lab: Our foundation has provided computers for every classroom & the library. This summer, it will begin construction to make room for a lab as well. Read less

Loma Portal is an excellent school with dedicated, experienced teachers and an extremely involved PTA. My son has attended Loma Portal from K through 2nd grade to date and we have been very pleased with the high quality of his teachers and with the school generally. The school is very community oriented
... Read more in addition to having superb academics, so we have become more involved with our community simply by having our son attend this neighborhood school. Many students are from outlying areas, however, which enriches and broadens the community of which we are now a part. The facilities are great--with a new library building and other recent upgrades. As a Ph.D. and former university educator familiar with how students with poor primary educations fare later in life, I am very pleased to be able to send my children (my daughter starts next year) to such a fine school. Parent involvement at this school is the best I've ever seen. There is an extremely active PTA and foundation. Teachers are flexible and care about the kids genuinely. Brand new playground equipment and a climbing wall. Also the school has a ton of architectural character. The annual jog a thon is excellent

Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course.
