We LOVE Barnard! The low student-teacher ratio really helped our shy child come out of his shell. The teachers are dedicated and highly-qualified. The new principal is energetic & involved --probably knows each & every student by name! And, the Mandarin program is lead by exceptional teachers who make

Our family doesn't speak any other language besides English so it's a real testament to the program that my child is learning Mandarin so effortlessly. Leaving our large, established, neighborhood school just down the street to commute 20 miles each way for Barnard's new magnet program was not an easy decision to make but, it was definitely the right one! Barnard is a great school with a fantastic program, rigorous academic curriculum, gifted teachers, active parent involvement, and a caring staff. We started our 1st grade daughter at Barnard b/c of the new Chinese magnet program in Sep '08. We couldn't be happier with our decision! Even though we commute 30 minutes each way to get her there, it is well worth it. I do not have any experience with this school in the past, but this year Barnard

Class sizes in the lower grades have a cap at 15 students per teacher - excellent ratio! We are very happy with our daughter's teacher. I have 3 children ages 9-17 all of whom have attended Barnard. When my eldest was about to start kindergarten many friends and neighbors told me terrible things about Barnard and encouraged me to enroll my daughter elsewhere. Luckily I did not listen to them. I have seen many changes at this school over
... Read more the last 10 years or so, in the beginning I had many doubts and reservations. I'm happy to say that there are fantastic caring teachers there. The school is very small and everyone knows everyone else. Parent involvement is lacking and I did not have a problem with the principle(who has retired) but others did. The principle was from a different era (1950-1960s) and was very strict in many ways but genuinely cared about her students. Office staff can be a bit curt (but not as bad as Dana Middle school). All in all a good school. Read less

Barnard is a nice little school with a lot of potential and so many enthusiasic teachers who want to do great things for their kids but are prohibited because the admin. is in the dark ages. There needs to be more parent involvement with a stronger voice and more on-site participitation! The office

Barnard is a small school with a lot of good teachers. The parents need to be more involved with school activities, and the PTO needs to be reestablished.
