We've been incredibly happy with Joaquin Miller. We have two kids there, and every teacher we've had thus far has been extremely committed to her students. Meanwhile, the parent community is very supportive, giving this not-so-small school a small-school feel.

Joaquin Miller is a wonderful school. Our daughter has gone there for the past five years and has had excellent learning experiences. There is a tremendous commitment by (the majority of) the teachers to create learning experiences that are enriching, integrating art and cultural sensitivity into lessons.
... Read more The teachers are very encouraging and receptive to parental involvement and support. The student population is diverse, offering opportunities for kids to build diverse relationships. Teachers are sensitive to the needs of their students, and will collaborate with parents to ensure that their child gets the attention and opportunities they need to succeed. There is a very active core-group of parents that participate extensively in the school, both during classes and for events. It would be good to identify ways to increase the participation of those parents that don't participate as much and who feel it isn't their responsibility to help the school. Read less

Joaquin Miller is an amazing public school. Our family left Oakland for another area and public school system, but moved back because we missed the diversity and variety that Oakland offers. This is a fantastic public elementary school. There is a terrrific staff with great leadership at the principal level. There is a great community feeling at Joaquin Miller and it shows in every aspect of the educational experience. They offer outstanding extras in addition to the basic academic programs

There is considerable parental support and the PTA is highly involved both as support to staff when possible and as an effective fundraising machine. Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course. Before/After School

Vocation/Technical Curriculum
Vocational and/or technical courses offered within a comprehensive school, usually a senior high school.
Special Education Classes
A school or program within a school that provides services and training to students with moderate to severe mental and/or physical disabilities.
Adult Education Classes
Programs offering GED or equivalent courses for adults within regular schools, whether classes are held during evening or daytime schedules.
English as Second Language
English language classes for students whose first language is not English.
