Brisbane Elementary School is fabulous in many ways. It's a warm, friendly, safe environment for children. The building is beautiful. It's well maintained and charming in ways that new schools aren't. There is a library, art and music classes and after school care. The principal is very involved
... Read more and accessible. Teacher quality varies from excellent to not. The fatal flaw in this school is academics. Reform math and a strong constructivist pedagogy have resulted in poor performance on standardized tests and students that aren't prepared for middle school. It is the classic outcome of constructivist pedagogy: the children have positive feelings for subjects but are not good at them. If constructivism and reform math are your cup of tea, this school is for you. If you are seeking rigorous academics and the possibility of a career in science or mathematics for your child, stay away. Read less

This is my son's first year at BES and I can't say enough about this school. These teachers really care about their students. My son's teacher even did a home visit to better bond with the 'family'. The principal is out mingling with students and teachers alike every morning and knows many of us
... Read more by name. Parental invovlement is also great here. Parents regularly volunteer in the class room, fund-raisers and even just watching the kids during their breaks. My son went to a private school for 3 years and I have to say the educational standards at BES is stellar compared to the private school. My first grader does book reports, spelling tests and math games each week. I highly recommend this school to anyone looking into good quality public schools. Read less

... Read more Center:TLC)where students get free homework and individual tutoring help in areas of need from actual teachers. The principal knows practically all of the parents and holds monthly morning coffee gatherings to obtain parent feedback and actually applies a lot of the suggestions and feedback. I'm also impressed with the high level of parent involvement through the PTO group. Parents are encouraged to get involved at all levels, i.e. volunteering in the classroom, field trips, fundraising, gardening etc. The school has just recently been renovated to be handicapped accessible, with new wiring, new flooring and new brighly painted classrooms. There is high parent involvment at BES. The teachers are proficient, concerned and supportive. The academic programs are excellent. Music and are programs are very good. Sports and activities are available through the city of Brisbane.

The Level of parent involvement in BES is very good & I was pleased with that. But the problem is that Brisbane does not have any text books. All homework is done on worksheets. Kids aren't taught to take good notes since they do not have a text book to reference in case theres any questions later.

Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level.
