17 Parent Reviews for St. Joseph Elementary School
The school has a good reputation and a beautiful campus, but don't let that fool you when considering elementary school for your child. Archaic teaching methods based on reward and punishment, strict and unkind staff and a serious lack of creativity make for a very poor learning experience.

We have four children with a bit of an age gap. The older two attended public school in Alameda and our experience was hit or miss, depending on the teacher that year. Mostly, it was a rough experience for both kids. Our younger two have attended SJES from Kindergarten through 4th grade now. We have

One of the major pluses as compared to our public school experience is the community. Our children feel safe, confident, and cared for by the teachers and staff. They feel empowered and they never feel lost in the crowd. The parent community is very involved - we are each others' support system and friends. The kids LOVE learning and I credit the environment at SJES - their teachers have been encouraging, enthusiastic, and attentive. We love our school. Read less

K - 4th grades are very strong. The middle school (6-8th grades) are in a shambles. These grades do still tend to fill up, with 34-36 kids per grade, primarily due to the even poorer quality of the local, public middle school. Hopefully the new principal can get the school's house in order.

St. Joe's offers solid opportunity for K-4 education. Good kids, caring, competent teaching staff. The upper grades have been plagued with staff turnover and suffer from lack of coherent science and math programs. The new principal may be able to solve these problems, but it will take time.

St. Joseph's offers incredible opportunities for students for participation in student government, sports, music and other extra curricular activities such as chess club at lunch and science classes and math tutoring after school.
