Except, of course, those Spanish students are 3-year-olds, the young man studying college biology is a high school sophomore, and the soccer coach is speaking in German. In 1993, Dr. Rountree realized her dream when she opened The Capitol School, and there is nothing typical about it. It is a Multiple Intelligence School based on the work of Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University. It has received accolades as a model school in a recent issue of the prestigious American Educational Research Journal and heralded as one of Edutopia magazines's' Daring Dozen of 2006,' an honor given to those 'who are reshaping the future of education.' In addition to a strong basic curriculum that includes math, reading, and writing, the students play outside everyday, study languages (German and Spanish, with opportunities to learn other languages such as French and Japanese), and have regular (at least weekly) art and music classes (with the opportunity to study instruments such as piano and violin). Also, the science program is strong--the elementary classes have extensive experience with the scientific method, dissection, earth science, and other topics that enhance their understanding of the world in which they are learning to fully participate and to make a positive contribution. Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course. Adult Education Classes
Programs offering GED or equivalent courses for adults within regular schools, whether classes are held during evening or daytime schedules.
English as Second Language
English language classes for students whose first language is not English.
