Home Details for 1125 D St NE

Exquisite and Historic Capitol Hill Townhouse
One of a kind loft-style townhouse in historic Capitol Hill. This 3 bedroom/3 bath has a real wow factor, featuring 20-foot ceilings, an acid-washed concrete floor, exposed steel beams, a floating cement staircase, granite countertops, and sliding barn doors. The living area has an industrial chic feel yet the cozy bedrooms help to soften the vibe. It has also recognized as a Washington Post House of the Week in recent years. Just blocks from Union Station, Eastern Market, Lincoln Park, and the nightlife of H Street. Available furnished or unfurnished on February 1st. Provided below is ...a brief overview of the property's history: Built in 1860, this home on D Street NE has a timeline that includes life as a pie factory and as an illegal bottler of alcohol during the prohibition period of the 1920s. In the late 1870s, Henry Kern bought the original one-story building from his father-in-law, and a few years later, built a two-story addition on adjacent land and raised his family and ran a bakery out of the space. Kern?s Pies were a neighborhood staple for the next few decades. Upon retiring, Kern decided to rent the building to a bottler, Ellis Duke. Duke turned out to be a nefarious character, using the property to distribute beer, whiskey and wine to the city during Prohibition until the building was raided by the police in 1928.
