"Chestnut Mound is an excellent place to raise children, or to simply relax and enjoy the scenery. There are lots of beautiful lakes and rivers. Fishing, canoeing, kayaking and horse back riding are just an example of the activities. Carthage and Smith County has traditional family values where family and wholesome activities are encouraged and expected. Neighbors are friendly but not intrusive. It is nice to live in a community where businessmen know your name and where deals are done on a handshake. It has been years since I have locked my doors and my keys are left in my cars. It is still an area where you can go to Walmart and see several cars with keys in the ignition. There are few communities today where that is still common. The High Schools football games are totally supported by the community. The huge bleachers are packed for each home game and there is a big following to the away games. I have been in Chestnut Mound for almost 20 years and have truly enjoyed my tenure here. I would highly recommend it for anyone raising kids, or retires looking for a small town pace with ample activities to keep you busy, or couples who just want to escape the rat race. "
