Since I was 29, I have owned 2 homes at a time, a primary and a vacation home. As my career has grown over the last 15 years, I have made sure to keep my homes and expenses modest so I can afford two properties. South Carolina is the MOST affordable housing area we have ever bought in. The majority of all taxes are paid by all the tourists and the cost per square foot is very reasonable, especially if you don't mind being inland between 2 - 60 miles. Tennessee is a close second in this regard. Both are great states to live in for couples with no kids. Education in public schools is a joke in both states. Illinois is by far the most expensive state and I only live in Chicagoland because my wife is from there. The taxes are insane, everything is Labor Union and extremely expensive. There are taxes on everything, excessive taxes too! Our same house in Park Ridge, Il in TN or SC would cost a third and our taxes are 14 times what our home was in SC and 1000 sq ft less. Taxes are not spent well either by the communities. Very wasteful indeed. Wisconsin is my next venture. I am looking for a home within 3 to 4 hours from the NW burbs of Chicago that has a piece of property (5 acres +). My wife thinks that we can find an affordable home on a lake... Right. I like Dane County and Door County because both offer tons of outdoor activities. Mt Horeb, Oregon, Brussels and Sturgeon Bay seem to be my favorites so far...
