Hi Clfeather; I would not recommend rent to buy options. I would go with a short rental period, even month to month first. While renting, check out lending brokers or banks, including local credit unions. With interest rates low, you may be surprised at what you can afford. There are a lot of condo/townhouses that have become real affordable, especially those in a short sales/reo situation. If you have the time and patience to wait out a short sale, while the banks make their decision, than you are at a great advantage and may be able to buy something way below market value. Worth looking into.
