Well, I guess I'll answer the question since all the other answers do not address it.
It's funny that you ask this question, if you go to my website and see my home page
http://www.HomesByAH.com, it explains that my company is thriving to do make Real Estate a more "professional" profession. I am actually promoting my website and will turn it into a Real Estate Company. My company will be held to the highest standards. All the agents and anyone else affiliated with the company will be ethical, moral and will hold others to a higher standard.
What I do is hold agents, lenders, title companies, brokerages to what they say and continue to get on them to complete the tasks at hand. I think what happens in this business is that agents think everyone is doing their part and let everyone else do the work. A lot of agents are lazy. Especially the ones who started right before the whole ARM boom. The agents who became agents in '05 and those years, did not have to do anything to sell a home. They just had to have to a license. They did not have to work hard to get their client approved because, obviously everyone got approved, even if you worked at McDonalds they could be approved for huge home(stated income). Also those agents claim they were great agents and talk about all the homes they sold. Yeah no kidding, a monkey could have sold that many homes in that time.
So now the market is tough. We actually have to work hard and keep everyone on their task. Joan I am so glad you asked this and want Real Estate to be improved. This is my passion and have been building my network here in Phoenix of people who will help lift this profession not keep it down. As soon as I see something shady or something inadequate, that person/company is cut off from my network of "goto" affiliates.
So to clarify, just hold people to their promises and what is expected of them. If you are working with another agent on the other side to close a home and they are not doing what they are suppose to be doing, go to their broker. If the broker does not make anything happen go to the board. Bad agents, lenders etc.. need to be reported in order to filiter out the trash. I do not think this "profession" will ever be "fixed" or totally improved, I mean you do not need an education to be a Realtor, so you cannot expect the people running these places to be completely adequate and held to any standard. I am not saying that you have to have an education to be good at something I am just saying that I have met some people and thought, wow!, they need to make the requirements a litle tougher to become an agent. Homes are a major part of our life and we have people who cannot write a description for a listing without misspelling every other word and having the description sound like a junior high studet wrote it. Again, I am not saying that you have to have a high education to be somebody, I am just saying that this profession should held to a higher standard.
So Joan I hope this helps.
Check out my website and drop me a line with your contact information. I would like to have someone like you to refer to if I ever needed to send someone to New Jersey. At least I know that you feel like you want to be a good agent and I could trust you to take care of a referral.
