I have never heard of galvanized pipes used in the 80's....they were last used in the 50's. Depending on where you live, you should look into your building code to determine was was allowed at the time in question. Galvanized conduits were used for electrical purposes though. If the property was rebuilt in the 80's, it is possible to still have plumbing left from previous years. A trip to Building and Zoning in your city will be your best resource.
