Family connections have always been at the center of Kraig Hursh's life, and have always been important to him. He lives in the area where he grew up, close to just about all his relatives. Holiday get-togethers are always major events in the Hursh family, filled with laughter and love. These connections play an enormous part in the "people person" that Kraig is today, and they led to one of the greatest moments in his life - his adoption of his son, Angel.
Becoming a parent had been a huge goal of Kraig's. Born in York, he was the third of four children, two girls and two boys. Among his most treasured childhood memories are the many visits to his Grandmother's farm with its rich pastures, flowing creeks and green hills. To Kraig it was paradise. He especially liked climbing the hills with his cousins. Once they'd made their journey "up the mountain" the children would sit aside one another and talk about all kinds of things, always aware of the wonderful experience they were sharing together. These were among the earliest connections in Kraig's life, and the most enduring.
The Small Town Life
Kraig was raised in Spring Grove, which has retained its charm over the years with its single traffic light and Mom and Pop stores. "Growing up in a small town was really a wonderful experience," Kraig says. Kraig's family was a close one with a very strong bond, and he enjoyed spending time with his siblings and cousins. In high school he found his niche in the music department, playing alto and baritone sax, performing in and directing school musicals, and singing with the choir in his senior year.
After graduation Kraig attended The International Fine Arts College in Miami. Some might find the transition from small town life to a bustling city daunting, but not Kraig. He immediately became involved in college life while studying merchandising and marketing. He remained in Miami Beach after college, honing his business skills as a merchandiser and assistant buyer. Several business trips to New York led to a move to The Big Apple, where he pursued a lifelong love of gourmet cooking at The French Culinary Institute in SoHo, studying under internationally renowned chef.
The Family Connection
But Kraig missed close contact with his relatives. Living at a distance meant only the occasional holiday visit, and he usually had to reintroduce himself to his younger nieces and nephews. "I longed for the sense of family that York really stands for," he explains. So he found a wonderful home on an acre of land with a swimming pool and a barn - the perfect place to raise a child. Today Kraig is a happy "soccer dad," active in his son's activities, the school PTO and his church.
