The short answer is that they can both be great or terrible. You need to make sure that the home is priced well and in a condition that you are prepared to handle. Some short sales are beautifully maintained and some are not. Some equity sellers have the home priced very aggressively and some do not..
I would find a solid buyer's agent who can make sure that you don't over pay, and then do a good inspection and you should be fine either way. I never suggest that a buyer walk away from either, just because of the type of sale it is.
