To answer your question directly, Yes, short sales can and often do take 6-18 months to process. And the vast majority of them do not close. If you're a first time home buyer, I would recommend that you steer clear of them. Below is a link to an article that will give you a little more insight into the insanity and complexities of short sales. And has been suggested, you would be WELL advised to secure the services of a Buyer's Agent to assist and represent you in the entire home buying process.
