Hi Carolyn,
From Montgomery to the city you have the Metro-North trains, the one from Middletown has a stop over in NJ and you change for the train to Penn Station. If you drive depending where you move the drive is about 1:10 to 1:30 hours depending on the time of day. Your best bet would be to take the Newburgh Beacon Bridge and take the Beacon train line which takes you directly to NYC with no change over and that takes you to Grand Central. Its a fast drive to the station straight down Route 84 which is in Montgomery and if you need to they have a ferry service from Newburgh to the train station in Beacon If you need information you can go to
