Christine, all of the answers below are good. I'm either a great person to ask, or the worst, because I have lived and worked in several areas of one zip code, sold a house in another zip code earlier this year to my daughter and son-in-law, and have had sellers and buyers (to say nothing of friends) throughout all three zip codes, and in every neighborhood, over the years. I've had clients who have had children graduate successfully from every high school in Columbia -- and the entire county -- so it becomes what you want for your student and his or her strengths.
My suggestion? Sitting down and talking about what you want in a house and neighborhood will be a great investment of time -- usually about an hour -- and help you choose the right area for you. You may want to consider several areas as you hunt for your new home. I've got some resources to help you, and can show you how to find all sorts of information for any specific home you are considering.
This is an important decision for you, and I'm glad you're taking the time to be careful -- and happy in your new neighborhood and home! - Mon Nov 9 2009, 11:18
