Gut out your Gutters during Fall Yard Upkeep!

Fall Home Maintenance Tip #3 – Yard Maintenance

I think one of the greatest parts about fall is the color changes but not all places in the United States gets to see those beautiful colors. Living in Texas, fall doesn’t seem to take place till almost when winter hits. Here are some useful information and tips to get your yard and plants ready for the fall and cold weather. As the boy scouts say, be prepared! (Because you never know what might happen if you get an unusual freeze – well then you were at least prepared for it.)

This time we are going to provide you some useful information about those gutters around your house. As the trees start shedding their leaves, you will want to start cleaning those gutters but you might want to take a look at them if you haven’t done this in a while. There are some individuals that don’t even think about checking their gutters or even clean them out. If you choose to clean the gutters yourself  then here are a few items you will need: a ladder, gloves, hose and garbage bags. Always keep in mind – be careful when climbing a ladder.

Here are some great easy steps to clean your ladder from Buildingmoxie.com:

Here are the easy steps in cleaning gutters:
Position the ladder near the downspout and don’t forget to tuck a few garbage bags into your back pockets. Some would use bucket with handle
but it’ll be too heavy for you to carry when it’s almost full.

  1. Using your rake/ trowel, begin scraping the dried leaves and other debris from your gutters. When taking out this debris, always remember to pull it away from the downspout as much as possible to prevent further clogging especially if it’s already clogged.
  2. While working be conscious of sharp objects. When scraping and pulling out dried leaves and other stuff, always remember to just get a handful and put it immediately in the garbage bag.
  3. When you feel like the bag is getting heavy, drop it slightly away from the bottom of the ladder so it won’t get in the way as you go down. Don’t forget to tie it before dropping so you won’t be sweeping the dirt up again when you get down.
  4. When all of the debris has been removed, pull out your hose and spray the gutter with water to clean it thoroughly. Let the water flow from the gutter to the downspout to make sure that nothing is stuck in it.

Here are some additional items that you will want to make sure to take care of while you are in your yard:

- Trim any tree limbs that are too close to power lines or your roof.
- Fertilize your lawn: this is the best time to provide nutrients for winter when the top layer will be dormant

Before freezing weather:
-Make sure to cover your plants and bring in any clay potted plants
- cover your outside faucets
*If you don’t have the materials already at home then  make sure to go now to your local hardware store to get them before they are sold out!
