Austin ranked 2 on a "New Best Cities" List

Texas cities dominate a new best-cities list by the Milken Institute, and Austin is tops among them.

Austin ranked second behind San Jose, Calif., on Milken's annual index of best-performing large cities. The rankings are based on job, wage and technology metrics over a five-year period. Here are the top 10:

1. San Jose, Calif.

2. Austin

3. Raleigh, N.C.

4. Houston

5. Washington, D.C.

6. Salt Lake City, Utah

7. Provo, Utah

8. Cambridge, Mass.

9. Charleston, S.C.

10. Fort Worth, Texas

Of the 200 cities listed, seven are in Texas. San Jose, Calif., vaulted 50 spots from last year to No. 1, a position it last held on the index in 2001. Austin was ranked No. 4 last year.
