Little Rock Farmers Markets

Little Rock Farmers' Markets - For the absolute freshest of ingredients, visit one of Little Rock's two farmers' markets located in the River Market District and at the Bernice Garden. There is nothing better in the summertime than fresh fruits and vegetables on the dinner table. Produce at the supermarket can be several days old before it even reaches the store shelves. Most commercial farms they come from use chemical pesticides and artificial preservatives to keep them "fresh" for their trip. Local Little Rock farmers' markets are great alternatives to supermarket shopping, especially for seasonal produce.

We're lucky to have two great farmers' markets here in Little Rock. The River Market District Farmers' Market (400 President Clinton Ave) caters to both tourists and local Little Rock citizens. Located in downtown Little Rock, the River Market District is also known for its abundance of entertainment. Local farmers sell their fresh peaches, watermelons, peas, greens, potatoes, peppers, squash, onions, lettuce and more directly from the backs of their trucks. Local Little Rock artisans also sell unique handmade arts and crafts. From 7am to 3pm every Tuesday and Saturday through October 27, 2012, you can purchase items directly from these vendors at one of the River Market's two pavilions that overlook the Arkansas River.

Also located in downtown Little Rock, the Bernice Garden is a public garden that was created to cultivate artstic expression in nature. Every Sunday, the garden hosts a farmers' market as well. It has rapidly become a favorite among local Little Rock residents. They strictly adhere to their policy that only the people who are selling the produce are the ones who grow it. Also, they make sure that anyone advertising organic goods have the certification to back that claim up. Typically, the farmers' market hours are 10am to 2pm on Sundays. However, the hot August weather means that temperatures can reach uncomfortable levels in the afternoon. So, during August, they close an hour early (1pm).

Many people are trying to live a healthier lifestyle. That includes reducing their "carbon footprint". Little Rock farmers' markets are a wonderful way to not only ensure the absolute freshest products make it to your family's dinner table, but also allow you to support the Little Rock economy by purchasing from local vendors rather than big supermarket chains. This way, everybody wins!
